Aiming to emphasize importance of interreligious dialogue;

Iran’s Cultural Attaché in Belarus visits Minsk Theological Academy


According to the Public Relations Department of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), Abolghasem Mokhtarian, Iran"s Cultural Attaché in Belarus, met with Sergey Gordon, Vice Dean, and Sergey Shatravsky, Associate Dean for Scientific and Research Affairs, in the Minsk Theological Academy campus.


At the beginning of this meeting, Mokhtarian introduced the Iranian Cultural Attaché Office"s activities and continued to introduce Iran’s vast scientific capacities, such as in the University of Tehran, its Faculty of Theology & Islamic Studies, and the University of Religions and Denominations in Qom.


He also introduced the International Center for Interreligious Dialogue & Civilization (CID) of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) as well as their activities. “The center was founded 27 years ago, and has conducted dialogues with Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Judaism, Buddhism, Shintoism, etc. ever since.” He added.


Iran"s Cultural Attaché mentioned the necessity for conducting dialogue between the Belarusian religious and academic activists and the Iranian scholars and intelligentsia of this field as an objective of this meeting; he discussed the necessity of conducting religious dialogues on the subject of ‘family’ by pointing out the arisen changes and developments in the international community, the birth and spread of phenomena such as the violence and injustice humanity is entangled with, and the similarities between the societies of Iran and Belarus in terms of the importance and stature of the family foundation and the preservation of positive ethical values in society.


Mokhtarian further discussed the readiness to participate in conducting joint confrences with the Minsk Theological Academy and to exchange faculty members.


In this meeting, Associate Dean for Scientific and Research Affairs at the Minsk Theological Academy, Sergey Shatravsky introduced the academy and its activities. “This academy is under the direct supervision of His Eminence, Metropolitan Archbishop Paul of the Belarusian Orthodox Church.


 “The Theology Faculty has a history of religious dialogue with other countries, including relations with the Russian orthodox educational institutions, as well as the Protestant and Catholic colleges of Germany, Poland, France, and Switzerland. In terms of cooperation with Islamic countries, this academy has mainly cooperated with the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran and does not cooperate much with other Islamic countries” he added.


“In 2009, this institution held a conference on dialogue with Islam, in which representatives of the Vatican as well as three professors of the University of Tehran participated. These conferences were normally attended by approximately 150 people; they were first organized by the initiative of Metropolitan Philaret, the late head of the academy. The latest conference was held in 2011” he explained, pointing out that the institution responsible for conducting conferences at the Minsk Theological Academy is the Institute for Interreligious Dialogue. /
