On the occasion of eve of the month of Muharram and start of mourning on the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the mourning banner was hoisted at the top of the dome of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein in the Iraqi holy city of Karbala.

According to Public Relations Department of Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO), millions of devotees of Imam Hussein (AS) attended the ceremony held for removing the red flag and replacing it with the black flag as official sign of the start of mourning season for Lord of the Martyrs, Imam Hussein (AS).

Large number of pilgrims from across Iraq, Islamic Republic of Iran and other countries gathered to watch the flag changing rituals. In addition to Karbala, in several other Iraqi cities such as Najaf, Samarra and Kazemain similar ceremonies were held and black flags were hoisted on the top of the domes of holy shrines of Imam Ali (AS) and other infallible members of the household of the holy Prophet of Islam (SA).
