Introduction

The advent of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula accorded a distinguished status to this vast geographical expanse owing to the fact that it was the birthplace of Muhammad the Trustworthy (amin) (PBUH), a fact that makes an investigation of the spread of Islam in the region of special significance. The Arabian Peninsula is bounded on its western, southern, and eastern flanks by the waters of the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Sea of Oman, and the Persian Gulf, and on the north stretches to the regions of Jordan and Syria. It encompasses Hijaz, Tahamah, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain and Najd. It goes without saying that the people of the area, with their own backgrounds and cultural and religious histories, must not have all at once embraced the new religion and that the spread of Islam in the peninsula must have taken place at several stages.
The message of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), first propagated by him in Mecca, met with little acceptance among the people of his birthplace, but he had other audiences who visited the city for pilgrimage and trade and it was a group of such travelers which laid the groundwork for the emigration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to Medina.
