Introduction

Africa is a vast continent, with a variety of cultural and civilizational zones, parts of which had remained obscure for those from Asia and Europe up until the recent centuries, when additional light was also thrown on what was considered as its discovered regions. The historical works compiled by the natives of the sub-Sahara and a major part of east Africa mainly date from a late period. Therefore, the main obstacle confronting any researcher working on the history of inner Africa is the paucity of ancient local sources. Thus the dearth of information with regard to the mode and extent of the spread of Islam in the interior areas of the continent is not necessarily an indication of the limited nature of this expansion.
