During the early Islamic centuries various Khawārej groups like the Biyāhaseh, the Tha’ālabeh, the Sofriyah, and the Abāziyah invited people to their faith in different parts of Iran with various degrees of success in the different geographical regions. However, it is worth mentioning that these groups made a very negligible impact in the political history of Iran. In fact, when one of the Tha’ālabah members called “Shaybān bin Salameh” turned rebellious against the Umayyads and joined Abu Moslem Khorāsāni, almost all the Tha’ālabah members condemned his move and ostracized him.
Another evidence of the negligible impact of the Khawārej in the political history of Iran can be found in the establishment of a Kharijite rule in Āzarbāyjān and Arān in north-west Iran during the 4th Century AH/10th Century AD, which, as per available evidences, belonged to the Sofriyah sect and lasted for a brief period of only two decades (30s and 40s).
