Introduction

From a legal point of view, the Sassanid rule which was based upon religion, commands an important position in the history of Persian laws. As mentioned earlier, religious guidelines had played a significant role in the legal system of Iran during the earlier periods. However, like the other aspects of the administration of the country, the Sassanid period holds a special position also in the legal arena as having based many of its laws upon religious tenets. As regards the source of the Sassanid laws, it could be said that they emerged from the teachings of the Dātik Avestā. However, the widespread implementation of the Avestan laws and their coordination with the social structure of the Sassanian Era called for a new interpretation of the old religious texts by prominent religious authorities, which would occasionally lead to differences of opinion and the delivery of disharmonious views on legal issues.
