Chastity, Role, and Importance of Family in the Contemporary World Conference Held at Iran Cultural Centre Nairobi

It brought together Islamic and Christian attendees, mainly women, to discuss the significance of chastity and the evolving roles of families today

As the world grows more complex and technology becomes deeply intertwined in daily life, the foundations of family and human relationships face increasing challenges.

Traditional religious and cultural values, long regarded as pillars of family cohesion and strength, now confront external influences that often clash with these ideals. Without preserving the sanctity of the family through religious, spiritual, and indigenous cultural guidance, society risks facing significant challenges.

These concerns were raised during a conference organised by the Cultural Council of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Nairobi.

The one-day event, held at the Council’s Parklands office, focused on "Chastity, Role, and Importance of Family in the Contemporary World."

It brought together Islamic and Christian attendees, mainly women, to discuss the significance of chastity and the evolving roles of families today. Attendees warned that unnatural practices, often imported from the West—such as same-sex relationships—pose a significant threat to families.

Other risks include a decline in chastity, defined as the practice of refraining from extramarital or all sexual activity.

According to Ambassador of Iran Ali Gholampour, the conference aims to create a platform for insightful dialogue on strengthening the family unit and understanding its role in today’s dynamic world.

He pointed out that this initiative reflects ongoing efforts to address cultural and social challenges impacting families globally.

“This collaboration is a platform for women to learn from each other’s experiences, particularly in areas like social development. We hope it will lead to greater economic opportunities and social empowerment,” said Gholampour. The engagement with women groups seeks to provide an opportunity for cross-cultural discussions between Iran and Kenya on vital societal issues such as single parenthood.

On his part, Iranian Cultural Counselor Ali Pourmarjan said that the engagement with the women, seeks to foster discussions on the evolving role of family and the significance of chastity in modern society.

“We are sharing perspectives on how family values are shifting amidst societal changes and the impact of maintaining traditional virtues,” said Pourmarjan.

The program seeks to provide women from both nations with opportunities to engage in various economic, social, and cultural activities.

The exchange will also highlight the importance of women's leadership roles in society, encouraging participants to become advocates for change in their respective communities.

“This exchange program will not only strengthen ties between Kenya and Iran but also provide women with tools to improve their livelihoods and make meaningful contributions to their communities,” said the chairperson of Women Organization in Kenya (Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation) Rahab Mwikali Muiu.
