Upon the invitation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), Mr. Abdolmajid Abolghasemi, the Cultural Counselor of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Manila, participated on Monday, April 28, 2025 (corresponding to 8 Ordibehesht 1404 in the Iranian calendar), in the opening ceremony of the 50th National Qur’an Recitation Competition. The event was held at the conference hall of the Lansones Asia Trade Center under the theme “The Holy Qur’an: A Guide for Peace and Tolerance.” The ceremony was attended by Mr. Sebuddin N. Abdurrahim, Secretary of the NCMF; Mr. Taher S. Lidasan, Executive Director; other commission officials; top national and international Qur’an reciters from the Philippines; ambassadors; and cultural representatives from various Islamic countries. The annual Qur’an Recitation Competition is one of the significant programs of the NCMF, aimed at promoting the Islamic heritage of Filipino Muslims and strengthening ties with the Islamic world. The best male and female reciters from across the nation are selected in this event to represent the country in international competitions.

The program commenced with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an by Master Abdul Latif Haji Dawood, who ranked second in the 21st International Qur’an Recitation Competition in Iran, followed by the Philippine national anthem. The host introduced the diplomats present and provided a briefing on the 50th edition of the national competition.

Next, Mr. Taher S. Lidasan, Executive Director of the NCMF, after praising the Almighty, welcomed Mr. Sebuddin N. Abdurrahim, Chairman of the NCMF; ambassadors and representatives from Islamic countries; commission officials; reciters; and guests. He stated: "Tonight, we gather in a grand assembly to inaugurate the 50th National Qur’an Recitation Competition under the guidance of our Secretary, Mr. Sebuddin N. Abdurrahim, and the distinguished leadership of the renowned architect, Engr. Ben Rajiv Qasim, appointed by the Honorable President. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to both."

He continued: "The 50th anniversary of the National Qur’an Recitation Competition represents half a century of unwavering commitment to faith, knowledge, and the eternal beauty of the Divine Word. This event provides an opportunity to reflect on its profound influence over the centuries in guiding hearts, stimulating minds, and reinforcing deep connections with the Islamic Ummah."

"This competition is not merely a cultural or religious occasion; within the framework of the Commission’s cultural efforts, it has served as a meaningful platform for promoting peace, coexistence, and mutual understanding across diverse communities—as reflected in the theme of this year's edition. Each recitation echoes the harmony, wisdom, and radiance of the Holy Qur’an, reminding us of virtues like kindness, humility, and sincerity that unite the Ummah."

He added: "I would also like to take this moment to honor a figure who has consistently avoided outward praise and attention. Tonight, we pay tribute not only to an official but to an enlightened and committed leader whose strength, wisdom, and guidance are evident not in grandeur but in his steadfast and humble service."

"Ladies and gentlemen, true leadership does not seek fame but manifests in recognizing and uplifting others, in visionary thinking, and in sincere service. On this blessed night, we see the essence of leadership embodied in our esteemed Secretary, Mr. Sebuddin N. Abdurrahim."

"Under his leadership, the Commission has witnessed remarkable progress and achievements. As we celebrate this golden jubilee, let us reflect on how we can pass on the core values of humility, determination, and collective effort—rooted in the radiant teachings of the Qur’an—to future generations. Once again, brothers and sisters, I warmly welcome you to the 50th National Qur’an Recitation Competition."

Following him, Mr. Sebuddin N. Abdurrahim, Secretary of the NCMF, praised the Almighty and welcomed the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, Commission staff, reciters, and scholars in attendance. He said:

"Tonight, we have gathered not only to witness the beauty and mastery of our esteemed reciters but also to honor 50 years of enduring commitment to the noble mission of elevating the Word of Revelation as the foundation of Islamic faith, identity, and unity."

"With pride, I share a significant achievement that is the result of our collective efforts. During my tenure as Secretary, our talented reciters have brought honor to our nation on the international stage. In October 2024, one of our outstanding reciters earned second place in the international competition in Malaysia, and recently, another of our youth claimed second place in the competition in Indonesia. These honors reflect the growing prominence of Filipino Qur’an recitation in the Islamic world." "These achievements are no accident but the result of years of dedication, structured training, and a supportive environment fostering spiritual growth and personal discipline. We have taken deliberate steps to enhance the quality and experience of this competition. From humble beginnings, we now proudly host this golden jubilee in a luxurious venue befitting our guests and participants."

"This progress signifies our commitment to upholding the sacred purpose of this program and providing a dignified experience to all. Such success would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Cultural Affairs Department. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Architect Bernadette Kashim, Director of the Department, and her team for turning vision into reality."

"As we celebrate this 50-year spiritual journey, we are thankful for divine grace that has enabled the uninterrupted continuation of this competition over five decades—a testament to sincere hearts and God’s boundless mercy."

"The theme this year, ‘The Qur’an: A Guide for Peace and Tolerance,’ is especially relevant in today’s troubled and misunderstood world. The Qur’an reminds us that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice, kindness, and deep mutual understanding."

"It teaches that tolerance is more than acceptance—it is embracing diversity as a reflection of divine wisdom. Indeed, the Qur’an is a beacon in darkness, a source of mercy in times of crisis, and a unifier amidst division."

"May this competition not only showcase vocal beauty, but also renew our commitment to living by the Qur’an’s lofty principles—love for peace, respect for human dignity, and unwavering faith in God’s mercy and wisdom."

"To our beloved reciters: you are not merely readers of divine verses—you are bearers of sacred wisdom. Carry this trust with humility and pride. And to all those involved in organizing this event—staff, volunteers, sponsors, and service providers—know that your efforts are cherished by God and great reward awaits you."

"Before concluding, I remind you of four divine promises to hold dear throughout your lives:

  1. ‘Call upon Me, and I will respond to you.’ So, pray consistently.
  2. ‘Remember Me, and I will remember you.’ In joy and sorrow, keep God in your thoughts.
  3. ‘If you are grateful, I will increase your blessings.’ But if you are ungrateful, severe punishment awaits. So always be thankful.
  4. ‘God will not punish them as long as they seek forgiveness.’ So, let repentance be a constant in your life."

"Remember always: supplication, remembrance, gratitude, and repentance. Once again, congratulations to all on this blessed occasion. May the Almighty guide us in serving the Qur’an and Islam, and may He bless us with peace, unity, and prosperity."

Later, Ms. Elizabeth Lopez de Leon, Assistant Secretary, read a message from Honorable Secretary Johnvic Remulla Jr., on behalf of the Department of the Interior and Local Government:

"On behalf of the Department, I extend our warmest regards and appreciation to the NCMF for organizing the 50th National Qur’an Recitation Competition. This event has, for five decades, united the Filipino Muslim community in celebrating the Divine Word and the teachings of the Qur’an."

"This year's theme, ‘The Qur’an: A Guide for Peace and Tolerance,’ reinforces our shared commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence, and kindness among all peoples and faiths."

"The outstanding achievements of Filipino Muslim representatives on the global stage—such as Ms. Misaba Sal’s recent success in the international Qur’an competition in Indonesia—testify to their continued excellence."

"President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has emphasized the importance of compassion and inclusivity in realizing the vision of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and accordingly, Republic Act No. 12160—the ‘Philippine Islamic Burial Law’—was enacted."

"The government is further committed to serving Muslim communities through initiatives such as the ICCMN normalization mechanism, integration of former MILF and MNLF members into the national police, and establishment of a special Hajj fund."

"This event stands as a testament to the Qur’an’s timeless guidance toward peace, respect, and coexistence, and highlights the role of Filipino Muslims in building a nation founded on love, justice, and empathy."

"Our faith unites us and directs us toward building a Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines) grounded in inclusivity and respect for diversity."

At the conclusion, guests were invited to join in a group photo session.

It is worth noting that on the sidelines of the event, the Iranian Cultural Counselor met with Mr. Sebuddin N. Abdurrahim, Chairman of the NCMF, and emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation between Iranian and Filipino Muslim communities. He noted that under the existing cooperation agreement with the Commission, the Iranian Cultural Section had facilitated the participation of four Filipino reciters in the 41st Qur’an Recitation Competition in Tehran, where Master Jasim Haji Dawood earned third place and Nazir Asghar secured fourth place. He expressed readiness to host the top winners of this 50th national competition in the upcoming 42nd round of the Tehran event—a proposal warmly welcomed by the Secretary.

The ceremony concluded with a dinner and words of appreciation to all attendees.
