The topic is anticipated to take centre stage during the upcoming ninth session of the Mid-Term Review of the Zimbabwe-Iran Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation, scheduled for later this month, ahead of the anticipated State Visit to Iran by President Mnangagwa.

This was revealed by Iranian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Amir Hossein Hosseini, when he paid a courtesy call on Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga at his offices yesterday.

The Government has expressed interest in tapping into Iran’s success in the manufacturing of medical drugs and related consumables, which has seen them locally manufacturing up to 95 per cent of all the country’s medical requirements.

Speaking to journalists after meeting VP Chiwenga, Ambassador Hosseini said their discussions centred on the implementation of cooperation agreements entered into by the two Governments.

The two signed 12 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in different sectors when President Mnangagwa met with his then counterpart, President Ebrahim Raisi, who came to Zimbabwe for a State visit in 2023.

“First of all, I should mention that it was a great and true pleasure for me and my colleagues to meet VP Chiwenga,” said Ambassador Hosseini.

“In the meeting, we benefited from his thoughtful and insightful remarks regarding the latest situation of our bilateral relations. We touched upon some key issues in our bilateral agenda. It was a very constructive and positive discussion.

“We hope that during my stay in Zimbabwe, I can take certain decisive steps to promote our bilateral relations. We also had a discussion regarding our high-level political area, including the visit of His Excellency the President of Zimbabwe Dr Mnangagwa, and also the visit of our First Vice President, Dr Aref, to Zimbabwe.”
