Asiab Kharabeh Waterfall of Jolfa

Asiab Kharabeh (lit. ruined mill), which is called “Kharaba Deyirman” in Azari language, is a waterfall located near the border of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, in the border town of Jolfa - one of the northern counties of East Azarbaijan Province of Iran - and the southern bank of Aras River. Jolfa County has several special historical sites and is, therefore, considered one of the most attractive destinations for tourists who travel to East Azarbaijan; second after Tabriz.

Situated 135 km north of Tabriz, Jolfa houses the Aras free-trade and industrial zone and is considered one of the main trade and export poles of the region.

Features and Geography of Asiab Kharabeh Waterfall

The height of the main waterfall of Asiab Kharabeh is about 15 meters. The water of this waterfall is supplied from Mount Kiamaki, which is one of the highest peaks in the region, and after passing through the mosses and aquatic plants, turns into a series of streams that join together and flow towards Shamar. There are several small and big waterfalls on both sides of the main waterfall.

Because of being near an old abandoned and ruined mill, this waterfall is called “Asiab Kharabeh” (meaning ruined mill). The height of this mill is 10 meters and the area of its lower part is 200 square meters. The tourist visits made to this area have prompted the renovation of this mill in recent years. There are also several recreation resorts around the waterfall.

The waterfall is located 27 km from Hadishahr and 5 km from Manjan Abad. The proximity of this waterfall to the Aras River has made it possible to visit a wide range of other natural attractions.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Asiab Kharabeh Waterfall?

The cold and mountainous climate of the region has made it difficult to visit this site in the cold seasons. There are many warning signs around the waterfall, which caution the visitors about the long frosts in the region. In years when the temperature drops, the waterfalls freeze, and as soon as it gets warm, masses of ice fall from the height, which may injure the tourists who are present in that place. Therefore, it is better to visit this beautiful waterfall sometime in the middle of spring to the end of summer.

If you plan to visit Asiab Kharabeh Waterfall, also take time to visit other surrounding attractions like Kordasht Village, which was the headquarters of Iran’s army during the Iran-Russia wars that took place between 1804 and 1828 AD. At that time, crossing the Aras River would take place near this village, and for this reason, the remains of military fortifications and watchtowers can still be seen there.
