It is a great pleasure that today I have the honor to attend an academic gathering being held in the memory of one of the prominent Islamic scholars and personalities of contemporary India, the late Allama Maulana Syed Ali Naqi Naqvi. Undoubtedly, in order to understand a person's personality more correctly, one has to see in which family and environment he was born and brought up, who were his teachers and where and by whom was he trained, how his students have learn from him, what acadmic works and impact he left in the society .
In understanding about the late Allamah Maulana Syed Ali Naqi Naqvi, one can realize the greatness of this great contemporary Islamic scholar, because Allameh Seyyed Ali Naqi Naqvi was brought – up in the midst of ijtihad and prominent parents. In terms of family connection, the great Ijtihad family and in terms of lineage were also from the Sadat dynasty, a family that is a symbol of the strong and long-standing historical and cultural ties between the two great nations of Iran and India.
During his studies, both in Lucknow, India, and in Najaf, he benefited from famous Islamic Jurists. During his five-year stay in Najaf, he benefited from prominent Ayatullahs of that time, including Ayatollah Sayyed Abul Hassan Isfahani, Ayatollah Naini, and Ayatollah Seyed Zia Iraqi, etc., each of whom was considered one of the most prominent Shiite scholars and authorities. He was allowed to practice ijtihad by many scholars, mujtahids and great scholars of his era. He trained many outstanding people who became proud of the Indian society. Great personalities such as Modarres Afghani, late Syed Kalbe Sadiq Naqvi, and other students who became or are prominent figures in India and other countries. He was also successful in raising scholarly and intellectual children, and like him, they are the source of outstanding academic services in the society.
Perhaps the intellectual comprehensiveness and depth of knowledge of Allameh Seyyed Ali Naqhi Naqvi should be considered as his most important characteristic. Despite having studied in the traditional system of Hozha in Lucknow and after returning from Iraq, he worked as a professor in the Faculty of Arabic Literature of Lucknow University. He was selected and taught in that faculty for nearly twenty-seven years. After that, he became an assistant professor in the Faculty of Theology of Aligarh University (which is considered one of the most famous universities in India) and taught there. There are many works left by him that are still used by the people. The huge volume of his great works with more than two hundred authored and translated works on various Quranic subjects, beliefs, philosophy, history and literature... indicates the breadth of his contribution and the depth of his knowledge.
Another point in his comprehensiveness is that, although there are many religions in India, the personality of Maulana Seyyed Ali Naqi Naqvi was respected among all the followers of religions and he always tried in the direction of solidarity and unity of religions and religions. Literary taste, works and poems the remnants of this great world are another sign of his comprehensiveness and breadth of thought. His library contains many and diverse poems on various topics, especially on historical and religious topics, which made him one of the poets. As well as his skill in translating works into Arabic and English and vice versa, including the English translation of Nahj ul-Balagha, he is among the leading translators.
Perhaps the most comprehensive description of Allameh Seyyed Ali Naqi Naqvi has been provided by biographers and scholars of Islamic teachings. As the author of Sabt-ul-Asanid records, he has introduced him as a scholar, historian, writer and a capable poet. Seyyed Mohammad Sadiq Bahrul Uloom mentioned Maulana Ali Naqi Naqvi as a literary icon. Sheikh Agha Bozor Tehrani and Seyyed Hassan Sadr have considered him as a research scholar. The author of the book Ali (a.s.) Fi al-Kitab Walsunnah Waladab has described Maulanan Naqvi as intelligent and diligent in his studies and research.
In conclusion, we appreciate the great spirit of this great scholar and honor his name. I would like to thank Prof.S.M.Naqvi for organising this conference and for giving me the opportunity.
