Abbasabad Caravanserai of Taybad — Witnessing the Grandeur of an Authentic Iranian Monument
The location of Abbasabad Caravanserai
Taybad shares a border with Afghanistan to the east and remains one of the most significant border regions in eastern Iran, as it has been throughout history. The existence of the Dogharoun border, which is part of the Dogharoun Special Economic Zone, supports this claim. This special economic zone was established in 2010 (1389 in the Iranian calendar) in Taybad and quickly became one of the main centers for exporting fuel products, construction materials, food items, and other goods to Afghanistan.
History and Features of the Abbasabad Caravanserai in Taybad
The Abbasabad Caravanserai is believed to date back to the Timurid period (1370 to 1506 AD), with major renovations carried out during the Safavid era (16th century AD). The caravanserai covers an area of more than four thousand square meters. Since it was located on a busy trade route, extensive amenities were provided for travelers, including a cistern, numerous rooms for accommodations, and several stables for keeping pack animals. The caravanserai has two courtyards, each surrounded by porticoes that connect the rooms for the caravans to the open space. The size of the rooms varies in different sections of the caravanserai. The cistern was filled with water from the qanat and surface water from rainfall. The scale and facilities of the caravanserai suggest that during its peak, it was considered one of the strategic establishments along the route connecting Iran with the East.
National and World Heritage Registration of the Abbasabad Caravanserai in Taybad
The Abbasabad Caravanserai was registered in the National Heritage List of Iran in 1999 (1378 in the Iranian calendar). It was one of the 54 caravanserais of Iran that were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
