The region now known as "Greater Khorasan," which includes the provinces of North Khorasan, Razavi Khorasan, and South Khorasan in Iran's administrative divisions, has long been one of the most significant areas in the country. One of the reasons Khorasan held such a unique position throughout various periods was its geography, which, for much of history, served as the border of Iran and facilitated cultural and trade exchanges. This region was the easternmost part of Iran, which is why it was called "Khorasan"  a word that, according to linguists, is a transformed form of "Khwar-e-stan," meaning "the place where the sun rises" and stands tall on the horizon. The Silk Road, which for centuries was the most important trade route connecting China to West Asia and Europe, passed through Khorasan. As a result, the region developed numerous facilities and structures to serve as resting places for caravans and bases for securing the routes. It is no surprise that today, Khorasan is home to many caravanserais from ancient times, and the province is renowned for these historic structures. Among these is the Abbasabad Caravanserai, which is one of the notable caravanserais in Khorasan and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Although this caravanserai has suffered damage and erosion over the centuries, it still stands as a testament to the grandeur and elegance of traditional Iranian architecture, and a visit to it allows one to admire the splendor of this authentic monument.

The location of Abbasabad Caravanserai

The Abbasabad Caravanserai, also known as "Rabat Abbasabad," is located in the Taybad county of Razavi Khorasan province. It is approximately 26 kilometers from the city of Taybad. To reach this historic site, you need to travel north-west from the city along the old road to Torbat-e Jam.

Taybad shares a border with Afghanistan to the east and remains one of the most significant border regions in eastern Iran, as it has been throughout history. The existence of the Dogharoun border, which is part of the Dogharoun Special Economic Zone, supports this claim. This special economic zone was established in 2010 (1389 in the Iranian calendar) in Taybad and quickly became one of the main centers for exporting fuel products, construction materials, food items, and other goods to Afghanistan.

History and Features of the Abbasabad Caravanserai in Taybad

The Abbasabad Caravanserai is believed to date back to the Timurid period (1370 to 1506 AD), with major renovations carried out during the Safavid era (16th century AD). The caravanserai covers an area of more than four thousand square meters. Since it was located on a busy trade route, extensive amenities were provided for travelers, including a cistern, numerous rooms for accommodations, and several stables for keeping pack animals. The caravanserai has two courtyards, each surrounded by porticoes that connect the rooms for the caravans to the open space. The size of the rooms varies in different sections of the caravanserai. The cistern was filled with water from the qanat and surface water from rainfall. The scale and facilities of the caravanserai suggest that during its peak, it was considered one of the strategic establishments along the route connecting Iran with the East.

The caravanserai’s distance from populated areas has not only protected it from human-induced damage but also created an ideal environment for astronomical observation, thanks to the absence of light pollution. Near the caravanserai, there is a mudbrick fortress, and together these two structures form the “Abbasabad Complex.”

National and World Heritage Registration of the Abbasabad Caravanserai in Taybad

The Abbasabad Caravanserai was registered in the National Heritage List of Iran in 1999 (1378 in the Iranian calendar). It was one of the 54 caravanserais of Iran that were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.
