Tashkooh

This mountain is a natural wonder that has been burning day and night since ancient times and this is the reason that the indigenous people of the area call this mountain “Tashkooh” (meaning Mountain of Fire). The cause of the fire is the sulfur vapors rising from the porous layer of mountain surface affected by the sublimation and nebulization of the sulfur in the ground as well as natural gas emitted from the depths of the earth to the surface through every seam and crack in the surface of the earth, such that at night, the burning light of this gas is more visible. Owing to the presence of gas in the air, it is not possible to light bonfire within the vicinity of Tashkooh.

Tashkooh is one of the tourist attractions of Ramhormoz and Khuzestan province and attracts many tourists, especially at night. Of course, the flames can be seen during the daytime! These hills, which contain hundreds of colored flames of fire and one does not need anyone’s help to reach them, dazzle the eyes of every viewer. The geotourism of this region has also attracted the attention of many domestic and foreign geologists.

Tashkooh is not the only tourist attraction of this region. The area has many springs that are filled with natural bitumen instead of clear water. There is also a mountain in the Aghajari region called Kooh-e Soukhteh, where fire ignites through rocks and its black smoke fills the sky. The smoke is so dark that the surrounding space of the mountain gets completely hidden.
