Wetlands and Their Environmental Importance

A wetland is a place between land and water that may have water all the time or at some points of time in the year. The vegetation surrounding a wetland is a suitable place for the habitation of birds. Wetlands are also suitable places for the growth of all kinds of aquatic plants. Many wetlands are resting places for migratory birds.

Features of Yaniq Wetland

Yaniq Wetland stands at an altitude of 1600 meters above sea level. This wetland is divided into two small and large parts and the depth of each part does not exceed two meters. The distance between the two parts of the wetland is about 1.5 km. The catchment area of Yaniq Wetland is covered by fields and meadows, therefore, only a few willow trees or shrubs can be seen around it. The steppe and semi-steppe plants and weeds grown in these fields and meadows are generally used for livestock grazing.

Sedges and buttercups are the seasonal plants growing around the wetland, which usually get hidden under the water in the rainy seasons when the wetland expands.

The smaller part of the Yaniq Wetland is surrounded by reeds creating a suitable environment for aquatic birds. The nests of some birds can be seen in between the reeds. The white-headed duck is one of the most important animal species of this wetland.

The Benefits of Yaniq Wetland

The water of Yanig Wetland is used for irrigating the agricultural lands surrounding it. Local farmers use pumps to transport the water of this wetland to their fields.

The Best Time to Visit Yaniq Wetland

Since Yaniq Wetland is not beep enough, it freezes during the cold days of the year, which may last for five months. However, as the weather warms up, migratory birds use this wetland as a place to rest. Therefore, spring and early summer are the best time to visit this natural attraction.

Yaniq Wetland is located near a village by the same name, i.e. “Yaniq” and to visit it, one has to travel about 35 kilometers from Hashtrud towards Maragheh.
