Examining Perceptual Challenges and Academic Cooperation Opportunities between Iran and Sri Lanka at the University of Colombo

Academic and media experts from Sri Lanka and Iran discussed challenges related to perceptions of Iran, media representation, and opportunities for strengthening university cooperation. The meeting emphasized the importance of academic exchange, research collaboration, and broader access to educational resources on Iran.

On Monday, May 12, 2026, Dr. Sugath Senarath, Head of the Department of Mass Media at the University of Colombo, Dr. Niroshan Ranjala, a faculty member of the department, and Mr. Chandana, a Sri Lankan media journalist, met with Ali Kebriai Zadeh, Cultural Counselor of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sri Lanka, to discuss issues related to academic understanding, media representation, and opportunities for future cooperation between the two countries.

Several key topics were discussed during the meeting:1. Academic Understanding of Iran in Sri LankaParticipants discussed the need for a broader and more research-based understanding of contemporary Iran within Sri Lanka’s academic community. It was noted that much of the existing perception is shaped through secondary international sources, which may provide only a partial picture. The participants emphasized the importance of strengthening scholarly engagement and encouraging more direct academic study of Iran.2. Limited Availability of Iran Studies Resources in EnglishThe meeting highlighted the shortage of English-language academic resources on Iran available to Sri Lankan universities. Expanding access to educational materials and books covering interdisciplinary subjects such as politics, culture, economics, religion, sociology, and the arts — particularly cinema — was identified as an important step toward promoting a more comprehensive understanding of Iran.3. Media Interaction and Information ExchangeParticipants also discussed the importance of strengthening communication and information exchange between media institutions in both countries. Greater direct engagement between media organizations was considered beneficial in fostering more diverse perspectives and improving mutual understanding.4. Expanding Inter-University CooperationThe discussions emphasized the importance of enhancing academic collaboration through joint research projects, faculty exchange programs, academic visits, student research initiatives, and the organization of joint conferences between universities in Iran and Sri Lanka.5. Cultural and Social Dimensions of ResilienceIn the concluding part of the meeting, discussions addressed the impact of regional developments on educational and social institutions and highlighted the concept of resilience as an important cultural and social characteristic within Iranian society. Participants emphasized the importance of safeguarding educational institutions and maintaining principles consistent with international norms and humanitarian values. The meeting was regarded as a constructive step toward strengthening academic dialogue and expanding opportunities for educational and research cooperation between Iran and Sri Lanka.
