Tehran Festival to Commemorate Arbaeen’s Heritage

The first-ever international festival dedicated to Arbaeen’s cultural and historical heritage will be held in Tehran on August 4 and 5.

The significant event will be held at the 19th-century Masoudieh Palace to explore and celebrate the profound impact of the occasion, which marks the culmination of 40 days of mourning for the slain Imam Hussain, the third Shia Imam and a grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Mahdieh Bod, the Scientific Secretary of the event, emphasized the deep-rooted historical and cultural significance of Arbaeen, stating that its heritage has profoundly connected with the hearts of believers and devotees of Imam Hussain over the years. “Such a connection is evident in the annual pilgrimage of millions to the holy city of Karbala.”

“Arbaeen is not just a religious event; it is an extraordinary phenomenon with immense heritage and historical importance that draws millions of pilgrims each year," Bod said. "Our aim with this commemoration is to delve into the various dimensions of this event and enhance its understanding globally."

Organized by the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism and under the auspices of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, the event will embrace academic discussions, cultural exhibitions, and artistic performances, all aimed at shedding light on Arbaeen’s legacy.

Every year, millions of devout Shia Muslims from Iran and beyond embark on an epic journey known as the Arbaeen trek that, according to participants, is not just merely a religious observance but a deeply personal and introspective voyage.

Destined for the holy city of Karbala, where Imam Hussain and his loyal companions were martyred, the gathering is characterized by a remarkable display of unity, as people from diverse backgrounds join together to mourn and commemorate the Imam’s martyrdom.
