National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang'ula on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, visited the Iranian Embassy to condole with Ambassador Ali Gholampour following the tragic death of Iran President Ebrahim Raisi.

Raisi together with other high-ranking officials perished on Sunday, May 19, 2024, in a helicopter crash.

Raisi's body alongside that of Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of East Azerbaijan province, other officials and bodyguards were recovered Monday morning, some hours after their helicopter crashed in Iran’s wild northwest region.

Personal condolences

Wetang'ula in a statement said he had visited the Iranian Embassy to personally relay his message of condolences.

"Today, I visited the Embassy of Iran to personally express my sincere condolences to the people of Iran following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and high-ranking officials in a tragic helicopter crash," Wetang'ula said.

He went further to say that the visit offered him a chance to relieve memories of his interaction with the late Iranian President when he visited the Mausoleum of Kenya's first president the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta at Parliament buildings to lay a wreath during his visit in July 2023.
