Condolence Message from the Cultural Consulate of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the Passing of His Holiness Pope Francis

The Cultural Consulate of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who departed this life on Monday, April 21, at the age of 88. After being released from hospital on March 23 following a five-week stay due to complications from double pneumonia, he succumbed to the illness.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected in 2013 as the successor to Pope Benedict XVI. He was the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years and was widely respected for his unwavering calls for peace in a world marked by conflict.

His Holiness was a beacon of compassion, humility, and many moral courage. His steadfast commitment to the dignity of all people, his courageous voice in defence of the marginalized, and his tireless efforts to foster interfaith dialogue have left an enduring mark on humanity.

The oppressed and impoverished around the world have lost a true advocate. The people of Gaza, in particular, have lost a compassionate defender. His call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for peace across war-stricken regions echoed the cries of countless innocent lives affected by violence.

May his legacy of mercy, justice, and unity continue to inspire future generations. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Catholic community and to all those across the globe who mourn this profound loss.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
