Iranian films line up at Euroshorts Festival

Four Iranian movies will be competing in the Euroshorts Festival in Poland.

“Gladiators”, “Dog”, “Exchange” and “Fence” will be screened on different days of the international short film contest, which will take place in Gdansk and Warsaw from November 27 to December 3.

“Gladiators” by Maryam Rahimi follows Ali, who must pay a debt to prevent the early marriage of his sister Narges. The story takes its cue from the sad reality in many countries of the world, including Iran, set of the film, to the detriment of children: precocious workers, victims of arranged marriages often for money, members of disadvantaged families who do not protect them and who they often expose them to violence and exploitation.

Directed by Mohammad-Hassan Yasai, “Dog” is about a clergyman who suddenly encounters a drug checkpoint while driving and filming the landscapes along the road with his cellphone. Officers want to inspect his car with a dog, but he does not allow it because he believes that dogs are religiously unclean. He is involved in a car crash on the way. A dog finds him on the road and tries to rescue him, but it does not succeed. Suddenly, his turban falls to the ground. The dog picks it up, puts it in the middle of the road, lies down next to it and waits for help.

“Exchange” by Barzan Rostami tells the story of the irresponsibility of people in some critical situations, which push them to do unusual things to save their lives.

In “Fence”, director Maryam Rezai focuses on a teenage athlete, whose family problems thwart her efforts to succeed.

There were 60 short films selected for the 31st edition of the Euroshorts Festival 2022 from Afghanistan, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Peru, Poland, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and several other countries.
