Black Cow Twin Lakes
Situated in the Sarab Bagh district of the Abdanan County (Ilam province) the Black Cow Twin Lakes is called twin because the two lakes are connected together by a 70 meters long natural canal that is 8-meter-wide and 4-meter-deep (the first lake is located somewhat higher than the second one). The water of these two lakes is so clear that make it looks like an aquarium full of fish. These natural lakes of 12 meters deep - covering an area of 4500 square meters - are surrounded by plains and relatively high mountains.
There are many stories about the name of these twin lakes. Some local people believe that it has been given this name because of the resemblance of these lakes to the horns of a cow horn. According to some other people, however, and based on existing legends, a hippopotamus lived in this lake and since this hippopotamus was black and unknown to the people of the area, the lakes came to be known as “Black Cow”.
