Ugandans hold requiem Mass for Pope Francis at Lubaga Cathedral Kampala

Hundreds gathered today at Lubaga Cathedral in Rubaga Division to take part in a special requiem Mass for the late Pope Francis, commending him to God.

Among the guests were Rt. Hon. Jessica Alupo, Vice President of Uganda, representatives from Buganda Kingdom, Mr. Abdollah Abbasi, the Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran who accompanied by Hon. Issah Katungulu Luyimbaazi, the African Youth Ambassador among other members of the diplomatic corps who included H.E. Fatima Fernandes, the Ambassador of the Bolivian Republic of Venezuela.

In his sermon, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, Archbishop Luigi Bianco, also urged leaders to emulate Pope Francis by standing for peace across the globe, starting with their families.

The Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, Archbishop Luigi Bianco, has called on the faithful and the Church to actively promote peace in a world plagued by conflicts and war.

The Papal Nuncio drew inspiration from the late Pope Francis’ teachings, emphasizing that peace is essential for humanity’s well-being. 

He stressed that the Church should champion the gospel of peace, love, and compassion, particularly for those in need, as Jesus taught and entrusted to his followers.

The Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Bianco was speaking during a requiem mass for the late Pope Francis, held at Rubaga Cathedral, which was attended by hundreds of Christians from diverse backgrounds. 

The Chairman of the Episcopal Conference, Rt. Rev. Joseph Antony Zziwa, Bishop of Kiyinda Mityana, described Pope Francis as a person who embodied zeal and commitment to Christ and the values of the Gospel. 

In a message read by Vice President Jessica Alupo, President Museveni condoled with the Catholic Church, stating that Pope Francis will be remembered for his voice of love, and his service to humanity, peace, and unity. 

Mr. Jafali Kigutiha, the chairperson local council one for Basecamp lower cell in Kasese Municipality in a separate interview, also says Pope Francis will be remembered for advocating towards addressing important global issues like economic inequality and security.
