Hamadan University of Medical Sciences, one of the main centers of medical centers of the Hamadan Province of Iran, is located next to the tomb of Avicenna.

Who was Avicenna

Born in Hamadan in the year 980 CE, Abu Ali al-Ḥusayn ibn Abdullah ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Sina al-Balkhi al-Bukhari, commonly known as Ibn Sina or Abu Ali Sina in the World of Islam and Avicenna in the Western world was a greatest Iranian physician, who is also famous for his expertise in mathematics, physics and philosophy. Ibn Sina passed away in 1037 in Hamedan and was buried in the same city. Iran’s national calendar commemorates Avicenna by calling the 23rd day of August “National Doctors Day”.

History of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences

In March 1972 a joint project between Iran and France led to the establishment of the Bouali Sina University in Hamadan. Three years later, the three fields of medicine, nursing, and health were founded in this university, which formed the core of its medical department of the university. After several years of activities, Hamedan University of Medical Sciences was founded as an independent university.

Education and Research at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences

Presently, more than seven thousand students pursue their higher education in 93 fields of medical sciences under the supervision of more than 500 full-time faculty members in the following faculties:

2. Nursing and midwifery

3. Pharmacy

4. Medicine

5. Paramedical

6. Rehabilitation

7. Dentistry

8. Advanced technologies in Medicine

Nahavand School of Paramedical, Malayer School of Nursing, and Asadabad School of Medical Sciences are other educational units of this university, which are located in different cities of the province.

The international campus of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences was inaugurated in 2013 by accepting 140 students at postgraduate and Ph.D. levels. The aim defined for this campus is to help expand fundamental and applied research in the fields of medicine and public health.

Four research institutes and 19 research centers have been established at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences to support the research activities of its researchers. This university also supervises the activities of 19 hospitals, medical centers, medical training centers, and specialized clinics. Nine health networks in different cities of the province are considered to be affiliated with the Hamedan University of Medical Sciences.

Hamedan University of Medical Sciences has launched the Health Technology Growth Center with the aim of helping the graduates of this university in their profession and supporting small and medium-sized industrial units in the field of healthcare. This center was established in 2012 and throughout its years of activities, it has welcomed new ideas from new technology units and researchers. Two offices of "Intellectual Property and Patent" and "Industry and Society Relations Office" function under the supervision of this center to support researchers as much as possible.

International Position and Activities of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences

The process of admitting foreign students to Hamedan University of Medical Sciences started in 2020. This university had admitted more than 500 non-Iranian students in 2023. Despite the fact that foreign students have been pursuing their higher education in 70% of different educational fields of the university, they have mainly been admitted in the fields of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.
