The geographical location of Bushehr Province, which is in the south of Iran and adjacent to the Persian Gulf, and the presence of abundant gas and oil resources in this province have made it one of the most important provinces of Iran. Due to these characteristics, the universities that have been established in this province are to train the specialized forces required by its large industries. One of these universities is the Persian Gulf University of Bushehr City.

History

Persian Gulf University is younger than many comprehensive universities in Iran and its establishment dates back to 1992 when this university started its activities by admitting students in two fields of civil engineering and mechanical engineering.

Having expanded over the years, Persian Gulf University has the following 9 faculties, nearly 8,500 students, and 260 full-time faculty members:

The Jam School of Engineering of this university is on a different campus in the city of Jam. This school was started in 2010 with two fields of software engineering and industrial engineering and some other fields were added to it in the years that followed. The school now has nearly 400 students.

The Persian Gulf University High School was started in 1993 with the aim of attracting and supporting top talents, especially from the rural areas of Bushehr.

Research Institutes of Persian Gulf University

• Persian Gulf Research Institute: This institute started working in 1995 under the name “Persian Gulf Studies and Research Center”, but in 2013, it was upgraded to being an institute to conduct research in the field of marine sciences. Presently, this institute is engaged in research in marine environmental issues, biotechnology, and marine biology.

• Information and Communication Technology Research Institute: This center works in the two main areas of the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. The primary goals of this institute are to study, investigate, and produce information and communication technology-related solutions and ICT-related strategic studies.

• Oil and Gas Research Center: This center was founded in November 2016 by keeping in view the position of Bushehr province and its huge oil and gas resources and in order to strengthen the scientific and research aspects of exploration and extraction projects. This center now hosts more than 40 postgraduate students.

• APR Research Center: Dealing with incidents and vulnerabilities and providing recommendations, security alerts, news, and statistics, as well as providing useful guidance and advice to respond to incidents are some of the activities of this center.

In addition to these centers, several research teams are also engaged in research in Persian Gulf University:

  • Applied nanobiotechnology
  • Computational intelligence and intelligent optimization
  • Sustainable membrane technology
  • Nanoplasmonics

The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center of the university has been established to support research and ideas. The main objective of the center is to direct the best ideas toward the commercialization cycle. The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center was founded in 2017 in a place with an infrastructure of 500 square meters, and in addition to university students, it also supports the creative ideas of other researchers. It is possible to install 20 technology units in the building of this center.

The departments of “Innovation in and Development of Agricultural Technology”, “Innovation in and Development of Creative Industries”, “Innovation in and Development of Biotechnology”, “Innovation in and Development of Manufacturing and Advanced Materials” and “Intelligentization and Internet of Things” are, presently, active in this center. The “International Mobile Software Development Center” is another department of this center.

International Activities of Persian Gulf University

So far, this university has signed memorandums of understanding with universities and scientific and research centers of 12 countries. The university also makes calls for the admission of non-Iranian students every year. Due to the services provided by the “Office of International Affairs and Non-Iranian Students” of this university, there is an increasing interest among foreign students to get admitted at it. Holding joint educational meetings and workshops with the presence of professors from foreign universities in various scientific fields is also one of the international activities of this university.
