Semnan province is one of the largest provinces in Iran and the presence of nearly three billion tons of mineral reserves and more than 40 types of minerals in this province has made it one of the most important provinces of Iran. Decades of research activities on mines and minerals in this province eventually resulted in the establishment of Shahrood University of Technology, as an important center of higher education in the field of mining engineering in Iran.

History

As the first center of higher education in Semnan province, the history of the establishment of Shahrood University of Technology dates back to 1973 when it was first established as College of Mining under the management of the private sector and admitting students at associate degree level in the field of “coal mining”. Two years later, the management of this institution was entrusted to the Ministry of Industries and Mines of the time and in 1982 it was promoted to a university and like other universities in Iran, it continued its activities as one of the centers higher education under the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education.

In 1987 AD various other courses in the field of mining engineering at associate degree level in civil engineering and electricity were founded to make this college an “Institute of Higher Education” and, eventually, this center was higher education was officially promoted and named Shahrood University in 1993. Keeping in view the inclusion of technical, industrial, and basic science courses, this university was renamed “Shahrood University of Technology” in 2002.
