Babol Noshirvani University of Technology

Scientific activities and quality of education imparted are considered to be the most important factors with regard to centers of higher education; the two features that are well combined in the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology making it one the top universities in Iran in technical and engineering fields including mechanical engineering and science and energy engineering. This university is the only technical university in the northern region of Iran.

The History of the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology

The history of the establishment of the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology dates back to 1969 CE when a person named “Seyyed Hossein Fallah Noshirvani” donated 11 thousand sq. meters of land to build an educational institution and in his honor, the institution was named “Noshirvani”.

Four years later, the Technical Teacher’s Training School officially started admitting students. In the first academic year of its activities, this school admitted students in three fields of architecture, electrical, and mechanics. In the following years, the activities of this center gradually expanded and after admitting students in the fields of chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, it was transformed into the “Noshirvani Technical and Engineering College” in 1992.

Eventually, this college acquired the status of a university in 2008 and the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology was established with five faculties of “Chemical Engineering”, “Electrical and Computer Engineering”, “Civil Engineering”, “Mechanics” and “Materials and Industrial Engineering”. In the same year, the Department of Basic Science was also formed in the university, which was later on granted the status of a faculty, increasing the number of faculties of this university to six. A group of “Islamic Studies” has been active in this university since a few years ago. The university admits students at three levels of under-graduation, post-graduation, and doctorate.

Research activities of the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology

Currently, Babol Noshirvani University of Technology is being transformed from a teaching-oriented university to a research-oriented university and is acquiring the characteristics required to become an entrepreneurial university.

The activities of several research institutes and research groups at Babol Noshirvani University of Technology are considered to be complementary to its educational activities. The research institutes of “Nano Technology”, “New and Renewable Energies” and “Advanced Material Forming”, along with the two research groups of “Intelligent Systems Research Group” and “High Voltage Substation Research Group” form the research components of this university. Due to the advances it has made in the field of water nanotechnology, Babol Noshirvani University of Technology is known as the pole of this science in the country. The university also publishes an international scientific journal titled “Journal of Water and Environmental Nanotechnology”.

The three centers of “Growth”, “Technology Growth”, and “Entrepreneurship and Interaction with Industry” of the university engage in supporting and commercializing students’ innovative ideas, promoting interaction between different industries of the region and researchers. and supporting knowledge-based small and medium businesses. These three centers help the graduates of different fields enter the job market.

International Ranking and Activities of Babol Noshirvani University of Technology

Babol Noshirvani University of Technology has achieved impressive ranks in the Shanghai Ranking in 2023. With a rank of 76 to 100 in the field of mechanical engineering and 151 to 200 in science and energy engineering, this university has been declared as the best university in Iran. The name of this university can also be seen among the top universities in Iran in the field of chemical engineering by being ranked 401 to 500. In the overall evaluation of Iranian universities, this university is ranked 351 to 400, and in the Shanghai ranking system, it has been introduced as one of the best universities in Iran in 2023.

The scientific and research activities of this university have enabled it to secure an acceptable position in other ranking systems as well. Obtaining the ranking of 237 in the field of “Engineering and Technology” in the ISC ranking system published in 2021, has made the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology to be recognized as the fourth Iranian university in this field.

Due to its achievements in different areas, the Babol Noshirvani University of Technology has been able to attract the attention of quite a number of foreign students such that about 250 of the 6,000 students of this university are non-Iranians. According to the officials of this university, the existing infrastructure for the university has to capacity to admit more non-Iranian students.
