Lorestan University

Lorestan province is one of the mountainous provinces of Iran with climatic diversity. “Lorestan University” is the largest center of higher education in this province, where about 9 thousand students study. The central campus of this university is located in the city of Khorramabad, the capital of this province, and it has four affiliated centers in other cities of the province.

History

Although Lorestan University began its activities as an independent university in 1993, its formation dates back to 1977 when it was started as the northern branch of the Jundishapur University of Ahvaz (Now Shahid Chamran University) by admitting 100 students in such courses as physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology at the undergraduate level.

Following the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, this center was detached from Shahid Chamran University and continued its activities as “Lorestan Institute of Higher Education”. In the following years, a plan to establish a comprehensive university in Lorestan province was proposed and finally, in 1993, it was implemented by upgrading the status of this institute to that of a university.

Faculties and Research Centers

Presently, Lorestan University has the following eight faculties:

1- Faculty of Natural Resources: With three departments: "Forestry", "Pasture and Watershed Engineering", and "Fisheries and Environmental Science and Engineering"

2- Faculty of Literature and Human Sciences: This faculty has nearly two thousand students, 80 full-time faculty members, and 10 educational departments.

3- Faculty of Agriculture: Established one year after the institute was upgraded to a university, this faculty 8 departments

4- Faculty of Sciences: In this faculty, 11 courses and orientations are taught at the undergraduate level, 24 courses and orientations at the master’s level, and 16 courses and orientations at the Ph.D. level. The faculty has 78 faculty members

5- Faculty of Engineering: Established in 2003, the faculty has seven educational departments.

6- Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences: "Business Management" and "Business Economics" were the first departments of this faculty. With the addition of the “Accounting” department and with 15 full-time faculty members, Lorestan University to make it one of the important centers of higher education in western Iran in the field of management and economics.

7- Faculty of Veterinary Medicine: Keeping in view the expansion of animal husbandry activities in Lorestan province, this faculty was established in 1993. Presently, there are eight educational groups are active in this faculty

8- Faculty of Chemistry: The history of this faculty dates back to 1977 when it started working as one of the four educational groups of the Lorestan Institute of Higher Education. In 2022, the chemistry group was detached from the Faculty of Sciences to form the Faculty of Chemistry. Presently, 19 full-time faculty members are active in this faculty.

The four affiliated centers of higher education of Lorestan University include:

Kouhdasht: Where Mathematics and its Applications are

Aleshtar: A center of higher education for girls, teaching, and training 500 students in the fields of "Computer Engineering", "Mathematics and Applications", "Business Management", "Industrial Management", and "Geography".

Poldokhtar: Established in 2012, this center began its activities by teaching computer engineering and agricultural engineering in two fields of plant medicine and horticulture science. Agricultural engineering, psychology, accounting, English language, and sports science are the other courses that were later on added to the earlier ones.

Nourabad: A center of higher education for boys it offers courses in the three fields of psychology, public administration, and accounting to about 220 students.

International Activities of Lorestan University

Lorestan University had hosted about 200 non-Iranian students in 2023. This university plans to increase the number of foreign students by increasing educational and welfare facilities. Currently, an office of "Scientific and International Cooperation" is working on managing the affairs related to the international activities of this university. In addition to expanding cooperation with foreign educational and research institutions, this office also organizes meetings and invites foreign personalities and professors to visit Lorestan University.
