Technical and Vocational University

The Iranian universities function under the supervision of three ministries: "Science, Research, and Technology", "Education" and "Health and Medical Education". Technical and Vocational University is one of the centers of higher education that functions under the supervision of the “Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology” and its affiliated branches are scattered throughout Iran.

History of Technical and Vocational University

The history of this university dates back to 1907 when the Iran-Germany Vocational School was established in Tehran, In 1965 it was transformed into the Institute of Technology with the aim of educating and training technical experts at the associate level. Four years later, a number of technical and vocational teacher training centers were established under the Ministry of Education’s Office of Technical and Vocational Schools. In 1986, this office started technical teacher training courses at the undergraduate level at the Institute of Technology. Eventually, in 1995, with the change in the form of education in Iranian high schools and the creation of a new educational system, a two-year associate course in technical and vocational fields was implemented in all technical and vocational colleges.

In 2011 Technical and Vocational Colleges and Faculties officially departed from the Ministry of Education and was affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology under the name of Technical and Vocational University (TVU) as the only state university for imparting academic technical and vocational training in Iran.

Courses Imparted at the Technical and Vocational University

Technical and Vocational University of 181 schools and colleges in which more than 170,000 students pursue their higher education in 200 fields of study, under the supervision of more than 17,000 teachers. By 2023, some 382 thousand people had graduated from this university.

In 2021, more than 300 non-Iranian students were studying at the Technical and Vocational University of Iran. The branches of this university offer post-secondary education up to associate degree level in the following five fields:

• Computer: network, information technology, programming, content production and graphics

• Services: hygiene and health, navigation and transportation, commerce and administrative affairs

• Industry: electricity and computer, machinery maintenance and repair, construction and architecture, materials, processing, and mechanics

• Agriculture: livestock affairs, agriculture and horticulture, food industry, and agricultural machinery

• Art: animation and cinema, handicrafts, design and sewing, music, painting, drama, production of television programs, and restoration of cultural works.

 

 

The courses imparted at the Technical and Vocational University are at two levels associate (54 courses) and undergraduate (26 courses) levels. The branches of the university are single-sex and two-thirds of the units are allocated for male students.

This university published three specialized journals consisting of the latest findings of different researchers. The publication of more than 1400 articles in international indexes is one of the achievements of the researchers of this university.

The Technical and Vocational University considers it its duty to connect its graduates with the industry and to ensure its implementation it has founded a center called "Entrepreneurship and Interaction with Industry" to follow the university’s entrepreneurial approaches. Forming committees related to entrepreneurship and development of university resources, empowering students and professors to enter the marketplace, analyzing the business environment and disseminating it for the use of university entrepreneurs, and helping local economies prosper based on the training provided in educational units, comprise some the goals of this center.
