Iran University of Science and Technology

Iran University of Science and Technology was the first specialized university established in this field and is currently considered one of the most prominent universities in the country.

History

In the years after World War I, a German school was functioning in Tehran. This school used German university teachers and received an annual grant from the government of Iran. The German Industrial School officially started its work in 1924 and it taught such techniques as carpentry and blacksmithing. Gradually, other courses such as mechanical engineering and higher mathematics were added to the courses taught in this school.

In 1929, the name of the German Industrial School was changed to “Advanced Art College”. By 1957, the management of this institution was transferred between several government institutions. In this year, the Advanced Art College was transferred to the place where the Amirkabir University of Technology is located today, and was named “Tehran Institute of Technology”. Five years later, certain changes occurred again in this educational center, and its location was moved to the northeast of Tehran. It was then decided that the institute would train qualified teachers for technical schools. In 1972 the institute was renamed “College of Science and Technology” and finally, due to the expansion of its activities received the status of a university in 1978.
