Graduate University of Advanced Technology of Kerman is one of the universities that was established in Iran as a specialized graduate university. During the course of its activities, this relatively young and growing center of higher education has tried to provide its students with a dynamic environment.

The History and Educational Activities of the Graduate University of Advanced Technology

Being the house to many mines and industries made the existence of a center for training specialists in various fields inevitable in this region. Therefore, the Graduate University of Advanced Technology was established in 2007 and the students of this university the number of which stands at 1000 pursue their higher education in the following faculties:

1. Electrical and Computer Engineering: This faculty, which was established at the same time as the university has 23 faculty members. Three groups of “Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering”, “Power and Control Engineering” and “Computer Engineering and Information Technology” operate in this faculty. There are eight majors in the master’s degree program and one major at the doctorate level of this faculty. The five specialized laboratories of this faculty cater to the needs of the students.

2. Mechanical and Materials Engineering: This faculty was established in 2017 by combining three groups “Materials Engineering”, “Energy Conversion Engineering” and “Design and Manufacturing Engineering”. At present, it has 11 faculty members, and five specialized schools are affiliated with it.

3. Chemistry and Chemical Engineering: The foundation of this faculty dates back to 2011 when students were admitted at the postgraduate level in analytical chemistry and nanochemistry. Three teaching groups of “Chemistry”, “Polymer Engineering” and “Chemical Engineering” are affiliated with this faculty. The polymer forming laboratory is the specialized laboratory of the faculty.

4. Civil Engineering and Geodesy: The need of the industry and mining sector of Kerman province caused this faculty to have a special place in this field from the very beginning of the establishment of the university. Five teaching groups and four specialized laboratories are affiliated with this faculty.

5. Sciences and Modern Technologies: The desire of the curriculum designers of the Graduate University of Advanced Technology to start interdisciplinary research in engineering sciences, was the cause of the foundation of this faculty and its 14 educational groups, which train specialists in two fields at the postgraduate and doctorate levels. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, this faculty is considered the largest faculty of the university and has 20 active specialized laboratories.

Scientific Position of Graduate University of Advanced Technology

Despite its short lifespan, this university has managed to be one of the top 10 Iranian universities of technology in recent years.

The following 5 research institutes and centers are affiliated with this university to strengthen its research structure:

1. Institute of Environmental Sciences: This 25,000-square-meter institute provides the researchers with a laboratory, a workshop, an office, and a library. This institute was founded in 2001 in the form of four specialized groups of ecology, biotechnology, biodiversity, and environment, and has so far held several conferences and several workshops in the field of stem cells and biological sciences.

2. Institute of Photonic: Established in 2004, this research institute has been working in four groups of laser, photonic, nanophysics, and optical fiber.

3. Institute of Materials: Three research groups of metals, ceramics, and new materials and 9 laboratories of this research institute cater to the research requirements of students.

4. Institute of Energy: Keeping in view the importance of energy in today’s world, this research institute was founded in 2004 in three groups: “Management and Optimization”, “Renewable Energy and Energy Conversion” and “Fuel Cell and Hydrogen”.

5. Institute of Information Technology and Computer: The structure of this research institute consists of three research groups including Computer and Information Technology, Telecommunication Systems and Intelligent Networks, and Cognitive Science and Intelligent Processing.

The establishment of the first science and technology park in Southeast Iran is considered one of the advantages of this university. The park supports innovative ideas in industrial and high-tech fields by hosting knowledge-based startups and businesses.
