Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences

The development of societies, in addition to raising the importance of health, has necessitated the establishment of specialized medical centers for imparting training in the field of health. Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, which is one of the leading universities of Iran in this field, has been founded in Sari, the capital city of the Mazandaran Province of Iran, to educate and train the required specialists to provide medical services in different fields of medical sciences.

History

The foundation of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences and Medical Services dates back to 1975 and the establishment of Sari School of Midwifery. Over the next decade, this school expanded and was eventually upgraded to the College of Nursing and Midwifery in 1988. The increasing expansion of urbanization prompted the separation of the Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences (in the city of Sari) from the Babol University of Medical Sciences.

Presently, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences provides healthcare services to more than three million people in 1110 rural health homes, 315 healthcare centers, 54 healthcare bases, and 21 networks and healthcare centers. In recent years, this university has managed to occupy the first rank in Iran in this field by expanding its medical services to the rural areas of the province.

More than 450 full-time faculty members educate and train more than eight thousand students in 104 different fields of medical sciences in the following seven faculties:

3. Health

4. Nursing and midwifery

5. Paramedicine

6. Dentistry

7. New medical technologies

Behshahr Nursing Faculty, Amol Nursing and Paramedical Faculties, and Ramsar Autonomous Campus are the three educational units affiliated with this university.

Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences also manages the activities of four knowledge-based companies and 27 research centers that operate in the field of health. The university also published five scientific journals in Farsi and eight journals in English on the outcome of the research conducted by researchers in the fields of medical and health sciences. The research activities of this university are mainly carried out under the supervision of the "Department of Research and Technology", which was started in 1991 with the aim of providing support to research activities and furthering research centers.

International Status and Activities of Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences

With the establishment of "Office International Affairs" in 2019., Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences has expanded its international activities. In addition to attracting foreign students, this office manages the university’s activities to improve its position in global rankings. Holding virtual international conferences and meetings and inviting professors and researchers from world-renowned universities and research institutes are other duties of this office. This university received the license to operate internationally in late 2022 and started admitting foreign students. In the first academic year after this event, 35 foreign students began to pursue their higher education at this university.

In terms of international indicators, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences has achieved significant positions among Iranian universities. For instance, in the 2023 report of the Shanghai ranking system, the university was among the top three universities in Iran in the field of clinical medicine with a rank of 201 to 300. In the field of public health, too, the university had obtained the rank of 301 to 400 to present itself as one of the top universities in Iran.

Similarly, in the Times ranking system report published in 2023, Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences was ranked second among Iranian medical sciences universities and third among all Iranian universities. Also, in the ISC ranking system, this center of higher education is among the best in Iran with a rank of 501 to 600.
