History

The initial core of what is now known as “Amir Kabir University of Technology”, was formed under the name “Tehran Polytechnic” in October 1956, through the efforts of Habib Nafisi. At that time, there were two technical institutes in Tehran named “Institute of Technology” and “Higher Art Center” and the purpose of establishing “Tehran Polytechnic” was to expand the activities of these two institutes. “Tehran Polytechnic” began to admit students in 1957, and with the establishment of five engineering fields of “electricity and electronics”, “mechanics”, “textile”, “chemistry”, and “civil”, its activities began to expand further since 1958.

One year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, i.e. in 1980, “Tehran Polytechnic” officially became the “Amirkabir University of Technology”; named after Amirkabir, who was one of the most influential figures in Iran’s contemporary history and who had created the first modern center of higher education in Iran by establishing “Darul-Funun”.

Presently, Amirkabir University of Technology has 16 faculties, four independent educational groups (Foreign Languages, Education and Humanities, Physical Education, and the International Language Center) and seven interdisciplinary groups (Robotics, Mechatronics, Space and Avionics Engineering, Materials and Corrosion, Energy Engineering, Information Technology, and Maritime Engineering).

The Campuses of the Amirkabir University of Technology

The following four campuses are affiliated with the Amirkabir University of Technology:

Mahshahr Campus: Known as the hub of the petrochemical industry of Iran, this campus admits students without charging any tuition fees. The campus was established in 2001 by admitting students in two fields of polymer engineering and petrochemical engineering. With the acquisition of the required facilities, several other disciplines and postgraduate courses were added to its educational programs.

Bandar Abbas Campus: This coastal campus of Amirkabir University of Technology is engaged in educating and training students in the two fields of marine engineering and marine machinery engineering.

Garmsar Campus: Established in 2010 with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship and strengthening technological capacities, this center of higher education is located over an area of nearly 1800 square meters and is equipped with various research, sports, and educational facilities.

Kish International Campus: This campus was established in 2018 with the aim of creating an international center of higher education and attracting non-Iranian students. Business management, information technology engineering, safety, health and environmental engineering, and civil engineering (construction management) were the fields in which students were admitted to this campus for the first time.
