History

The license to set up the Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS), originally called “Iran Medical Center” was issued by the Council for the Development of Higher Education on August 27, 1975. The schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Medical Sciences were the first schools to start their operations, and the first students were recruited to study medicine at the Iran Medical Center in September 1977. As the first step to establish a comprehensive scientific center in the field of medical sciences, a process of collecting authentic scientific journals and books and shaping the university library was launched and in less than two years, several thousand books and authentic scientific journals formed the initial structure of a library that became one of the most important medical information centers in the region and was referred to as a library and health information center in the Eastern Mediterranean region by World Health Organization.

After the victory of the Islamic Revolution, several colleges and institutions of higher education were merged into this center and it was officially renamed “Iran University of Medical Sciences” in 1986.
