Isfahan University of Technology
Having a historical cultural and civilizational background, Isfahan City of Iran is considered one of the scientific, cultural, and historical centers of the country. Among the several academic centers of higher education in Isfahan, Isfahan University of Technology has, due to its vast environment and unique facilities, made an important place for itself among the country’s universities.
History
In 1970, a plan was proposed to establish a campus of Sharif University of Technology in Isfahan. Subsequently, a land of 1600 hectares was considered for the construction of this campus, which would make it possible for the university authorities to prepare various research and industrial centers on the campus. The allocation process took some years and it was finally in the year 1974, that the construction of the campus began. In 1977 this campus was turned into the Isfahan University of Technology (IUT) and was eventually allocated 2300 hectares of land, making it the largest university in the country.
Education and Research Activities
Presently, 201 courses and orientations are taught in 15 faculties of this university: 27 courses at the undergraduate level, 106 courses at the master’s level, and 68 courses at the Ph.D. level.
Among the faculties of Isfahan University of Technology, Golpayegan Technical Engineering Faculty is located outside the central campus of the university. This campus has five faculties of mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and basic sciences.
The IUT has the following five research centers:
- Steel
- Avionics
- Water and Sewage
- Sea Science and Technology
- Nano Technology and Advanced Materials
- Information and Communications Technology
- Biotechnology and Bioengineering
Being located next to the Isfahan Science and Technology Town is one of the important features of Isfahan University of Technology. By providing its services, this science and technology town has achieved success in the fields of development, production, and export of knowledge-based products and employment of university graduates. The town accommodates newly established commercial research units and also research centers affiliated with organizations and industries. An urban complex has also been prepared in this town as the residential area for researchers.
IUT publishes 10 journals in Farsi and three in English. There are also five scientific poles active in this university, which include:
• Sensor and Green Chemistry: The main mission of this pole is to make gas and chemical sensors and compounds that remove solvents from chemical reactions. This pole was launched in Isfahan University of Technology in the year 2000.
• Biotechnology: Isfahan province is considered one of the most important centers of horticultural products in Iran. Therefore, this pole was established in 2002 to protect the trees and support the agricultural activities of the province.
• Steel Technology: Due to the existence of huge steel industries in Isfahan, by launching this pole in 2001 the IUT is looking forward to coming up with new steel production technologies.
• Risk Management and Natural Crises: Iran is a country that is exposed to various natural disasters. The Pole of Risk Management and Natural Crises was established at this university in 2018 to conduct research on suitable technologies to prevent the possible damages caused by these crises.
• Biotechnology and Bioengineering: It was established in 2008 with the aim of providing the necessary capacities to create, transfer, and develop the required processes for biological products.
International Position of the Isfahan University of Technology
The Isfahan University of Technology has always been one of the most important and prominent universities of technology in Iran. This fact can also be seen in the global rankings of this university. In the Shanghai ranking published in 2023, this university ranked 401 to 500 in the fields of biotechnology, agricultural science and physics, 301 to 400 in the fields of chemical engineering and mechanical engineering, and 76 to 100 in the field of science and technology of instrumentation (first in Iran), 201 to 300 in the fields of Food Science and Technology and Energy Science and Engineering, 51 to 75 in the field of mining engineering, and 151 to 200 in the field of metallurgical engineering.
In order to increase interaction with world universities and provide necessary services to non-Iranian students, a center named “Office of International Scientific Cooperation” was established at Isfahan University of Technology in 1990. The main goal of this office is to introduce the university at the international level and conclude MOUs with other universities.
