Kerman is one of the vast provinces of Iran with large mines and industries. Throughout history, this province has been considered the cradle of civilization, and its handicrafts and tourist attraction sites are world-famous. Today, more than 110 academic and higher education centers operate in this province with Kerman University of Medical Sciences being the main center for imparting higher education in the field of medical science and providing health and medical services to over 1.3 million people of this province.

History of Kerman University of Medical Sciences

In 1977, 50 students were admitted to pursue their higher education in medicine at Kerman University. Three years later, the activities of this department increased by admitting students in nursing and medical education. In 1984, the Faculty of Health was founded in Kerman University and a year later, in accordance with the law on the separation of universities of medical sciences from comprehensive universities, Kerman University of Medical Sciences began its activities as an independent university.

Presently, more than 5400 students pursue their higher education in Kerman University of Medical Sciences under the supervision of more than 580 full-time faculty members in the following faculties:

2. Dentistry

3. Pharmacy

4. Allied Medicine

5. Public health

6. Management and medical information

7. Persian medicine

8. Nursing and midwifery

Zarand Faculty of Medical Sciences of this university, which was established in 1992 began its activities by admitting 15 students and now it educates students in two fields of public health and nursing.

Kerman University of Medical Sciences also has 26 research centers operating under its supervision during the activity of which more than 720 research projects have been completed and more than 1300 articles have been published by researchers. The H index of Kerman University of Medical Sciences stands at 106.

24 hospitals, 9 health and treatment networks, and four medical training centers are also affiliated with the Kerman University of Medical Sciences. Health Science and Technology Park is one of the special units of the university, which was established in 2020, and its main goal is to manage the flow of knowledge and technology among the educational and research centers of the university and support innovation in the field of health-oriented technologies. In addition to this park, the growth center of the university, too, provides support to technology units in the field of healthcare. This center started its activities in 2010 and has been engaged in providing services to researchers and research-oriented units.

International Position and Activities of Kerman University of Medical Sciences

The Department of International Affairs of the university is responsible for concluding memorandums of understanding with foreign universities and scientific institutions, inviting foreign researchers and professors, and publishing the calls for admitting foreign students. According to the officials of the Kerman University of Medical Sciences, 211 non-Iranian students were studying at this university at the beginning of 2023. The university’s “Office of Foreign Student Affairs” caters to the welfare, educational, and accommodation requirements of foreign students. This office has been operating since 2016.

According to international ranking systems Kerman University of Medical Sciences has been one of the best universities in Iran. In the Shanghai ranking system that was published in 2023, Kerman University of Medical Sciences was ranked 301 to 400 in the field of public health and, thus, it was considered one of the top five universities in Iran in this field.

In the 2023 evaluation of the Times Ranking System, the name of Kerman University of Medical Sciences was ranked 15th among Iranian universities. In this ranking, Kerman University of Medical Sciences is sixth among Iran’s medical sciences universities with an overall rank of 601 to 800. Similarly, in the ISC ranking published in 2021, Kerman University of Medical Sciences was ranked 601 to 700 and one of the top universities in Iran in the field of medicine and public health.
