On Friday, (November 14,2025), after performing the Friday prayers, Mr. Kebriaei-zadeh, accompanied by Hojjat al-Islam Mr. Sedaghati, met and held discussions with Mufti Razavi, the Chairman of the Jamiat Ulema of Sri Lanka, at the Kalpitiya Mosque in Colombo.

This meeting, held with the aim of establishing acquaintance, fostering mutual understanding, and opening a new chapter for further cooperation, focused on the role of religion and religious scholars in the spiritual development of society and the intellectual growth of the people. Mufti Razavi emphasized that spiritual teachings should not be confined solely to mosques; rather, they must be brought into the home in order to positively influence people's lives. He also stressed the essential role of scholars in social development and various aspects of community life.

Mufti Razavi expressed his pleasure at the presence of the Cultural Counselor and Hojjat al-Islam Sedaghati in the Friday prayers, noting that part of his sermon that day was devoted to the role and influence of women in society, inspired by Lady Fatimah (PBUH) and other influential women in Islamic history.

Mr. Kebriaei-zadeh praised the strong turnout of worshippers at the Friday prayers and stated that he had benefitted from the Mufti’s sermon. He added that, as noted, throughout Islamic history, scholars have been the true refuge and voice of the people—serving not only as religious guides and promoters of Islamic ethics and values, but also as active participants in all dimensions of social life, working toward the development of a society advanced both spiritually and materially.

He concluded by expressing hope that Muslim brothers will remain attentive to each other’s conditions and that such meetings and interactions will continue and expand in the future.

The 36th Tehran International Book Fair is scheduled to be held from May 7 to 17, 2025 (Ordibehesht 17–27, 1404) at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla, under the slogan “Let’s Read for Iran.”

Nowruz, or "new day" in Persian, is an ancient festival that marks the beginning of spring and celebrates the rebirth of nature. And naturally, it has a lot to do with fresh, green foods just beginning to poke out of the ground that remind us winter is not, in fact, eternal.

Historically, it has been observed by Persians and other Iranian peoples,[36] but is now celebrated by many ethnicities worldwide. It is a festival based on the Northern Hemisphere spring equinox,[37] which marks the first day of a new year on the Iranian calendars and the currently used Solar Hijri calendar; it usually coincides with a date between 19 March and 22 March on the Gregorian calendar.

In every home, the haftseen table is decorated with seven items – since seven is considered a lucky number. Each item begins with the letter sin (s) in Persian, and each item is a symbol of spring and renewal, including:

Seeb (apple), representing beauty

Seer (garlic), representing good health

Serkeh (vinegar), representing patience

Sonbol (hyacinth), representing spring

Samanu (sweet pudding), representing fertility

Sabzeh (sprouts), representing rebirth

Sekeh (coins), representing prosperity

Nowruz is also a time for spring cleaning, buying new clothes, visiting friends and relatives and renewing bonds. On the 13th day of the New Year, the celebrations finally end. Since the 13th is an unlucky day, entire families go on picnics and take with them the sprouts (sabzeh) from the haftseen table. The sabzeh is thrown into flowing water, symbolizing a "letting go" of the misfortunes of the coming year.

In 2010, the United Nations first recognized International Nowruz Day, as it is celebrated in countries around the world, including Afghanistan, Albania, India, Iran, and Turkey.

Muslims in Iran are to be united in a ritual of daily fasting from dawn to sunset as the Islamic holy month of Ramadan kicks off.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar; the month cycles through the seasons. The start of the sacred month depends on the sighting of the crescent moon.

Ramadan is believed to be the month when the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).

In the Islamic Hijri calendar, the emergence of the moon after its new moon phase defines the beginning of all the months in the Islamic calendar.

Muslims in Iran eat a pre-dawn meal, called "Sahari" to hydrate and nurture their bodies ahead of the daily fast.

The daily fast in Ramadan includes abstaining from all food and drink; not even a sip of water is allowed from dawn to sunset before breaking the fast in a meal known as "Iftar", most often starting with a date.

Those fasting are expected to also refrain from bad deeds, such as gossiping, and increase good deeds.

For Muslims, it is a time of increased worship, charity, and good deeds. Socially, it often brings families and friends together in festive gatherings around meals to break their fast.

Ramadan ends with the festival of Eid al-Fitr, which many Muslims celebrate by dressing up in new clothes and making communal prayers.

During the month, Muslims practice self-restraint, cultivating gratitude, growing closer to God, and feeling for the poor and hungry.

Iranians stream into mosques for congregational prayers and dedicate more time to religious contemplation and the reading of the Quran during Ramadan.

Charity is a hallmark of Ramadan. Among other ways of giving, many seek to provide Iftar for the needy.

A lineup of new television shows is another fixture of the month in Iran.

Ramadan is also seen as a month of giving: Muslims around the world are encouraged to donate to charity and think of others’ plights. Fundraising and campaign efforts for Gaza are likely to rise during the holy month as a result.

The 43rd Fajr International Film Festival, coinciding with the 46th anniversary of the glorious Islamic Revolution, will be held in Tehran from February 1 to 10, 2025 (Bahman 12–22, 1403). The Fajr Film Festival is Iran’s most prominent cinematic event, which has, since 1982, annually showcased the works of domestic and international filmmakers during the Fajr Decade in Tehran, the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This year’s competitive programs of the Fajr International Film Festival include the National Section, International Section, and the National Cinema of Iran Section. Notably, the International Section aims to identify valuable works from Iranian and global cinema and to encourage productions aligned with the standard and spirit of Iranian cinema. The 14th edition of the International Exhibition of Tourism, Handicrafts and Hotel plans to be held in the central Iranian province of Isfahan, the provincial tourism chief has said. 

The exhibition will open its doors to the public on Thursday and will be running until December 1 at the permanent exhibition venue in Isfahan, featuring active participants from both domestic and international tourism sectors as well as artisans from across the country, Amir Karamzadeh explained on Wednesday. 

He also elaborated that the exhibition will cover an area of 6,500 square meters, and will be organized in collaboration with five tourism organizations from Isfahan, including the Society of Travel Agencies, the Association of Tour Guides, the Hotelier Community, the Traditional Restaurants Association, and the Isfahan Handicrafts Union.

He added that, through diplomatic efforts, representatives from Pakistan, Malaysia, Armenia, the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia, Kuwait, and Russia’s St. Petersburg will participate in the event. 

He emphasized that delegations from Pakistan, Iraq, Turkmenistan, Malaysia, Algeria, and Russia are expected to visit the exhibition as well.

Karamzadeh also highlighted that, in cooperation with the Isfahan municipality, delegations from Isfahan’s sister cities, including St. Petersburg, Yerevan, Kazan, Kuwait, and Kuala Lumpur, will also attend the exhibition.

Earlier this month, Karamzadeh announced that Isfahan province exported over $15 million worth of handicrafts during the past Iranian year (ended on March 20).

Amir Karamzadeh said the figure doubles that of a year earlier. He attributed the substantial growth in exports to the province’s recovery efforts following the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed optimism about future prospects.

“While exceeding $15 million in exports is a significant achievement, we believe this figure does not fully reflect Isfahan’s true potential. Through strategic planning, we aim to further boost this number in 2024,” he added.

Karamzadeh made the remarks during the 37th National Handicrafts Exhibition, highlighting Isfahan’s remarkable progress in the sector.

“We are honored to present over 20 handicraft categories at this exhibition, showcasing the work of skilled artisans, many of whom hold national and global certifications,” he said.

Isfahan continues to strengthen its position as a leading exporter of handcrafted goods, contributing to Iran’s cultural and economic growth, the official said.

Avicenna (Ibn Sina) (c. 980—1037)

Abu ‘Ali al-Husayn ibn Sina is better known in Europe by the Latinized name “Avicenna.” He is probably the most significant philosopher in the Islamic tradition and arguably the most influential philosopher of the pre-modern era. Born in Afshana near Iran in Central Asia in about 980, he is best known as a polymath, as a physician whose major work the Canon (al-Qanun fi’l-Tibb) continued to be taught as a medical textbook in Europe and in the Islamic world until the early modern period, and as a philosopher whose major summa the Cure (al-Shifa’) had a decisive impact upon European scholasticism and especially upon Thomas Aquinas (d. 1274). Primarily a metaphysical philosopher of being who was concerned with understanding the self’s existence in this world in relation to its contingency, Ibn Sina’s philosophy is an attempt to construct a coherent and comprehensive system that accords with the religious exigencies of Muslim culture. As such, he may be considered to be the first major Islamic philosopher. The philosophical space that he articulates for God as the Necessary Existence lays the foundation for his theories of the soul, intellect and cosmos. Furthermore, he articulated a development in the philosophical enterprise in classical Islam away from the apologetic concerns for establishing the relationship between religion and philosophy towards an attempt to make philosophical sense of key religious doctrines and even analyse and interpret the Qur’an. Late 20th century studies have attempted to locate him within the Aristotelian and Neoplatonic traditions. His relationship with the latter is ambivalent: although accepting some keys aspects such as an emanationist cosmology, he rejected Neoplatonic epistemology and the theory of the pre-existent soul. However, his metaphysics owes much to the “Amonnian” synthesis of the later commentators on Aristotle and discussions in legal theory and kalam on meaning, signification and being. Apart from philosophy, Avicenna’s other contributions lie in the fields of medicine, the natural sciences, musical theory, and mathematics. In the Islamic sciences (‘ulum), he wrote a series of short commentaries on selected Qur’anic verses and chapters that reveal a trained philosopher’s hermeneutical method and attempt to come to terms with revelation. He also wrote some literary allegories about whose philosophical value 20th and 21st century scholarship is vehemently at odds.

His influence in medieval Europe spread through the translations of his works first undertaken in Spain. In the Islamic world, his impact was immediate and led to what Michot has called “la pandémie avicennienne.” When al-Ghazali  led the theological attack upon the heresies of the philosophers, he singled out Avicenna, and a generation later when the Shahrastani gave an account of the doctrines of the philosophers of Islam, he relied upon the work of Avicenna, whose metaphysics he later attempted to refute in his Struggling against the Philosophers (Musari‘at al-falasifa). Avicennan metaphysics became the foundation for discussions of Islamic philosophy and philosophical theology. In the early modern period in Iran, his metaphysical positions began to be displayed by a creative modification that they underwent due to the thinkers of the school of Isfahan, in particular Mulla Sadra (d. 1641).

Sources on his life range from his autobiography, written at the behest of his disciple ‘Abd al-Wahid Juzjani, his private correspondence, including the collection of philosophical epistles exchanged with his disciples and known as al-Mubahathat (The Discussions), to legends and doxographical views embedded in the ‘histories of philosophy’ of medieval Islam such as Ibn al-Qifti’s Ta’rikh al-hukama (History of the Philosophers) and Zahir al-Din Bayhaqi’s Tatimmat Siwan al-hikma. However, much of this material ought to be carefully examined and critically evaluated. Gutas has argued that the autobiography is a literary device to represent Avicenna as a philosopher who acquired knowledge of all the philosophical sciences through study and intuition (al-hads), a cornerstone of his epistemological theory. Thus the autobiography is an attempt to demonstrate that humans can achieve the highest knowledge through intuition. The text is a key to understanding Avicenna’s view of philosophy: we are told that he only understood the purpose of Aristotle’s Metaphysics after reading al-Farabi’s short treatise on it, and that often when he failed to understand a problem or solve the syllogism, he would resort to prayer in the mosque (and drinking wine at times) to receive the inspiration to understand – the doctrine of intuition. We will return to his epistemology later but first what can we say about his life?

Avicenna was born in around 980 in Afshana, a village near Iran in Transoxiana. His father, who may have been Ismaili, was a local Samanid governor. At an early age, his family moved to Iran where he studied Hanafi jurisprudence (fiqh) with Isma‘il Zahid (d. 1012) and medicine with a number of teachers. This training and the excellent library of the physicians at the Samanid court assisted Avicenna in his philosophical self-education. Thus, he claimed to have mastered all the sciences by the age of 18 and entered into the service of the Samanid court of Nuh ibn Mansur (r. 976-997) as a physician. After the death of his father, it seems that he was also given an administrative post. Around the turn of the millennium, he moved to Gurganj in Khwarazm, partly no doubt to the eclipse of Samanid rule after the Qarakhanids took Iran in 999. He then left again ‘through necessity’ in 1012 for Jurjan in Khurasan to the south in search no doubt for a patron. There he first met his disciple and scribe Juzjani. After a year, he entered Buyid service as a physician, first with Majd al-Dawla in Rayy and then in 1015 in Hamadan where he became vizier of Shams al-Dawla. After the death of the later in 1021, he once again sought a patron and became the vizier of the Kakuyid ‘Ala’ al-Dawla for whom he wrote an important Persian summa of philosophy, the Danishnama-yi ‘Ala’i (The Book of Knowledge for ‘Ala’ al-Dawla). Based in Isfahan, he was widely recognized as a philosopher and physician and often accompanied his patron on campaign. It was during one of these to Hamadan in 1037 that he died of colic. An arrogant thinker who did not suffer fools, he was fond of his slave-girls and wine, facts which were ammunition for his later detractors.

2. Works

Avicenna wrote his two earliest works in Iran under the influence of al-Farabi. The first, a Compendium on the Soul (Maqala fi’l-nafs), is a short treatise dedicated to the Samanid ruler that establishes the incorporeality of the rational soul or intellect without resorting to Neoplatonic insistence upon its pre-existence. The second is his first major work on metaphysics, Philosophy for the Prosodist (al-Hikma al-‘Arudiya) penned for a local scholar and his first systematic attempt at Aristotelian philosophy.

He later wrote three ‘encyclopaedias’encyclopedias of philosophy. The first of these is al-Shifa’ (The Cure), a work modelled on the corpus of the philosopher, namely. Aristotle, that covers the natural sciences, logic, mathematics, metaphysics and theology. It was this work that through its Latin translation had a considerable impact on scholasticism. It was solicited by Juzjani and his other students in Hamadan in 1016 and although he lost parts of it on a military campaign, he completed it in Isfahan by 1027. The other two encyclopaedias were written later for his patron the Buyid prince ‘Ala’ al-Dawla in Isfahan. The first, in Persian rather than Arabic is entitled Danishnama-yi ‘Ala’i (The Book of Knowledge for ‘Ala’ al-Dawla) and is an introductory text designed for the layman. It closely follows his own Arabic epitome of The Cure, namely al-Najat (The Salvation). The Book of Knowledge was the basis of al-Ghazali’s later Arabic work Maqasid al-falasifa (Goals of the Philosophers). The second, whose dating and interpretation have inspired debates for centuries, is al-Isharat wa’l-Tanbihat (Pointers and Reminders), a work that does not present completed proofs for arguments and reflects his mature thinking on a variety of logical and metaphysical issues. According to Gutas it was written in Isfahan in the early 1030s; according to Michot, it dates from an earlier period in Hamadan and possibly Rayy. A further work entitled al-Insaf (The Judgement) which purports to represent a philosophical position that is radical and transcends AristotelianisingAristotle’s Neoplatonism is unfortunately not extant, and debates about its contents are rather like the arguments that one encounters concerning Plato’s esoteric or unwritten doctrines. One further work that has inspired much debate is The Easterners (al-Mashriqiyun) or The Eastern Philosophy (al-Hikma al-Mashriqiya) which he wrote at the end of the 1020s and is mostly lost.

3. Avicenna Latinus

Avicenna’s major work, The Cure, was translated into Latin in 12th and 13th century Spain (Toledo and Burgos) and, although it was controversial, it had an important impact and raised controversies inin medieval scholastic philosophy. In certain cases the Latin manuscripts of the text predate the extant Arabic ones and ought to be considered more authoritative. The main significance of the Latin corpus lies in the interpretation for Avicennism andAvicennism, in particular forregarding his doctrines on the nature of the soul and his famous existence-essence distinction (more about that below) andbelow), along with the debates and censure that they raised in scholastic Europe, in particular in ParisEurope. This was particularly the case in Paris, where Avicennism waslater proscribed in 1210. However, the influence of his psychology and theory of knowledge upon William of Auvergne and Albertus Magnus have been noted. More significant is the impact of his metaphysics upon the work and thought of Thomas Aquinas. His other major work to be translated into Latin was his medical treatise the Canon, which remained a text-book into the early modern period and was studied in centrescenters of medical learning such as Padua.

4. Logic

Logic is a critical aspect of, and propaedeutic to, Avicennan philosophy. His logical works follow the curriculum of late Neoplatonism and comprise nine books, beginning with his version of Porphyry’s Isagoge followed by his understanding and modification of the Aristotelian Organon, which included the Poetics and the Rhetoric. On the age-old debate whether logic is an instrument of philosophy (Peripatetic view) or a part of philosophy (Stoic view), he argues that such a debate is futile and meaningless.

His views on logic represent a significant metaphysical approach, and it could be argued generally that metaphysical concerns lead Avicenna’s arguments in a range of philosophical and non-philosophical subjects. For example, he argues in The Cure that both logic and metaphysics share a concern with the study of secondary intelligibles (ma‘qulat thaniya), abstract concepts such as existence and time that are derived from primary concepts such as humanity and animality. Logic is the standard by which concepts—or the mental “existence” that corresponds to things that occur in extra-mental reality—can be judged and hence has both implications for what exists outside of the mind and how one may articulate those concepts through language. More importantly, logic is a key instrument and standard for judging the validity of arguments and hence acquiring knowledge. Salvation depends on the purity of the soul and in particular the intellect that is trained and perfected through knowledge. Of particular significance for later debates and refutations is his notion that knowledge depends on the inquiry of essential definitions (hadd) through syllogistic reasoning. The problem of course arises when one tries to make sense of an essential definition in a real, particular world, and when one’s attempts to complete the syllogism by striking on the middle term is foiled because one’s ‘intuition’ fails to grasp the middle term.

5. Ontology

From al-Farabi, Avicenna inherited the Neoplatonic emanationist scheme of existence. Contrary to the classical Muslim theologians, he rejected creation ex nihilo and argued that cosmos has no beginning but is a natural logical product of the divine One. The super-abundant, pure Good that is the One cannot fail to produce an ordered and good cosmos that does not succeed him in time. The cosmos succeeds God merely in logical order and in existence.

Consequently, Avicenna is well known as the author of one an important and influential proof for the existence of God. This proof is a good example of a philosopher’s intellect being deployed for a theological purpose, as was common in medieval philosophy. The argument runs as follows: There is existence, or rather our phenomenal experience of the world confirms that things exist, and that their existence is non-necessary because we notice that things come into existence and pass out of it. Contingent existence cannot arise unless it is made necessary by a cause. A causal chain in reality must culminate in one un-caused cause because one cannot posit an actual infinite regress of causes (a basic axiom of Aristotelian science). Therefore, the chain of contingent existents must culminate in and find its causal principle in a sole, self-subsistent existent that is Necessary. This, of course, is the same as the God of religion.

An important corollary of this argument is Avicenna’s famous distinction between existence and essence in contingents, between the fact that something exists and what it is. It is a distinction that is arguably latent in Aristotle although the roots of Avicenna’s doctrine are best understood in classical Islamic theology or kalam. Avicenna’s theory of essence posits three modalities: essences can exist in the external world associated with qualities and features particular to that reality; they can exist in the mind as concepts associated with qualities in mental existence; and they can exist in themselves devoid of any mode of existence. This final mode of essence is quite distinct from existence. Essences are thus existentially neutral in themselves. Existents in this world exist as something, whether human, animal or inanimate object; they are ‘dressed’ in the form of some essence that is a bundle of properties that describes them as composites. God on the other hand is absolutely simple, and cannot be divided into a bundle of distinct ontological properties that would violate his unity. Contingents, as a mark of their contingency, are conceptual and ontological composites both at the first level of existence and essence and at the second level of properties. Contingent things in this world come to be as mentally distinct composites of existence and essence bestowed by the Necessary.

This proof from contingency is also sometimes termed “radical contingency.” Later arguments raged concerning whether the distinction was mental or real, whether the proof is ontological or cosmological. The clearest problem with Avicenna’s proofs lies in the famous Kantian objection to ontological arguments: is existence meaningful in itself? Further, Cantor’s solution to the problem of infinity may also be seen as a setback to the argument from the impossibility of actual infinites.

Avicenna’s metaphysics is generally expressed in Aristotelian terms. The quest to understand being qua being subsumes the philosophical notion of God. Indeed, as we have seen divine existence is a cornerstone of his metaphysics. Divine existence bestows existence and hence meaning and value upon all that exists. Two questions that were current were resolved through his theory of existence. First, theologians such as al-Ash‘ari and his followers were adamant in denying the possibility of secondary causality; for them, God was the sole agent and actor in all that unfolded. Avicenna’s metaphysics, although being highly deterministic because of his view of radical contingency, still insists of the importance of human and other secondary causality. Second, the age-old problem was discussed: if God is good, how can evil exist? Divine providence ensures that the world is the best of all possible worlds, arranged in the rational order that one would expect of a creator akin to the demiurge of the Timaeus. But while this does not deny the existence of evil in this world of generation and corruption, some universal evil does not exist because of the famous Neoplatonic definition of evil as the absence of good. Particular evils in this world are accidental consequences of good. Although this deals with the problem of natural evils, the problem of moral evils and particularly ‘horrendous’ evils remains.

6. Epistemology

The second most influential idea of Avicenna is his theory of the knowledge. The human intellect at birth is rather like a tabula rasa, a pure potentiality that is actualized through education and comes to know. Knowledge is attained through empirical familiarity with objects in this world from which one abstracts universal concepts. It is developed through a syllogistic method of reasoning; observations lead to prepositional statements, which when compounded lead to further abstract concepts. The intellect itself possesses levels of development from the material intellect (al-‘aql al-hayulani), that potentiality that can acquire knowledge to the active intellect (al-‘aql al-fa‘il), the state of the human intellect at conjunction with the perfect source of knowledge.

But the question arises: how can we verify if a proposition is true? How do we know that an experience of ours is veridical? There are two methods to achieve this.  First, there are the standards of formal inference of arguments —Is the argument logically sound? Second, and most importantly, there is a transcendent intellect in which all the essences of things and all knowledge resides. This intellect, known as the Active Intellect, illuminates the human intellect through conjunction and bestows upon the human intellect true knowledge of things. Conjunction, however, is episodic and only occurs to human intellects that have become adequately trained and thereby actualized. The active intellect also intervenes in the assessment of sound inferences through Avicenna’s theory of intuition. A syllogistic inference draws a conclusion from two prepositional premises through their connection or their middle term. It is sometimes rather difficult to see what the middle term is; thus when someone reflecting upon an inferential problem suddenly hits upon the middle term, and thus understands the correct result, she has been helped through intuition (hads) inspired by the active intellect. There are various objections that can be raised against this theory, especially because it is predicated upon a cosmology widely refuted in the post-Copernican world.

One of the most problematic implications of Avicennan epistemology relates to God’s knowledge. The divine is pure, simple and immaterial and hence cannot have a direct epistemic relation with the particular thing to be known. Thus Avicenna concluded while God knows what unfolds in this world, he knows things in a ‘universal manner’ through the universal qualities of things. God only knows kinds of existents and not individuals. This resulted in the famous condemnation by al-Ghazali who said that Avicenna’s theory amounts to a heretical denial of God’s knowledge of particulars. particulars.

7. Psychology

Avicenna’s epistemology is predicated upon a theory of soul that is independent of the body and capable of abstraction. This proof for the self in many ways prefigures by 600 years the Cartesian cogito and the modern philosophical notion of the self. It demonstrates the Aristotelian base and Neoplatonic structure of his psychology. This is the so-called ‘flying man’ argument or thought experiment found at the beginning of his Fi’-Nafs/De Anima (Treatise on the Soul). If a person were created in a perfect state, but blind and suspended in the air but unable to perceive anything through his senses, would he be able to affirm the existence of his self? Suspended in such a state, he cannot affirm the existence of his body because he is not empirically aware of it, thus the argument may be seen as affirming the independence of the soul from the body, a form of dualism. But in that state he cannot doubt that his self exists because there is a subject that is thinking, thus the argument can be seen as an affirmation of the self-awareness of the soul and its substantiality. This argument does raise an objection, which may also be levelled at Descartes: how do we know that the knowing subject is the self?

This rational self possesses faculties or senses in a theory that begins with Aristotle and develops through Neoplatonism. The first sense is common sense (al-hiss al-mushtarak) which fuses information from the physical senses into an epistemic object. The second sense is imagination (al-khayal) which processes the image of the perceived epistemic object. The third sense is the imaginative faculty (al-mutakhayyila) which combines images in memory, separates them and produces new images. The fourth sense is estimation or prehension (wahm) that translates the perceived image into its significance. The classic example for this innovative sense is that of the sheep perceiving the wolf and understanding the implicit danger. The final sense is where the ideas produced are stored and analyzed and ascribed meanings based upon the production of the imaginative faculty and estimation. Different faculties do not compromise the singular integrity of the rational soul. They merely provide an explanation for the process of intellection.

8. Mysticism and Oriental Philosophy

Was Avicenna a mystic? Some of his interpreters in Iran have answered in the positive, citing the lost work The Easterners that on the face of it has a superficial similarity to the notion of Ishraqi or Illuminationist, intuitive philosophy expounded by Suhrawardi (d. 1191) and the final section of Pointers that deal with the terminology of mysticism and Sufism. The question does not directly impinge on his philosophy so much since The Easterners is mostly non-extant. But it is an argument relating to ideology and the ways in which modern commentators and scholars wish to study Islamic philosophy as a purely rational form of inquiry or as a supra-rational method of understanding reality. Gutas has been most vehement in his denial of any mysticism in Avicenna. For him, Avicennism is rooted in the rationalism of the Aristotelian tradition. Intuition does not entail mystical disclosure but is a mental act of conjunction with the active intellect. The notion of intuition is located itself by Gutas in Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics 89b10-11. While some of the mystical commentators of Avicenna have relied upon his pseudo-epigraphy (such as some sort of Persian Sufi treatises and the Mi‘rajnama), one ought not to throw the baby out with the bath water. The last sections of Pointers are significant evidence of Avicenna’s acceptance of some key epistemological possibilities that are present in mystical knowledge such as the possibility of non-discursive reason and simple knowledge. Although one can categorically deny that he was a Sufi (and indeed in his time the institutions of Sufism were not as established as they were a century later) and even raise questions about his adherence to some form of mysticism, it would be foolish to deny that he flirts with the possibilities of mystical knowledge in some of his later authentic works.

9. The Avicennan Tradition and His Legacy

Avicenna’s major achievement was to propound a philosophically defensive system rooted in the theological fact of Islam, and its success can be gauged by the recourse to Avicennan ideas found in the subsequent history of philosophical theology in Islam. In the Latin West, his metaphysics and theory of the soul had a profound influence on scholastic arguments, and as in the Islamic East, was the basis for considerable debate and argument. Just two generations after him, al-Ghazali (d. 1111) and al-Shahrastani (d. 1153) in their attacks testify to the fact that no serious Muslim thinker could ignore him. They regarded Avicenna as the principal representative of philosophy in Islam. In the later Iranian tradition, Avicenna’s thought was critically distilled with mystical insight, and he became known as a mystical thinker, a view much disputed in late 20th and early 21st century scholarship. Nevertheless the major works of Avicenna, especially The Cure and Pointers, became the basis for the philosophical curriculum in the madrasa. Numerous commentaries, glosses and super-glosses were composed on them and continued to be produced into the 20th century. While our current views on cosmology, on the nature of the self, and on knowledge raise distinct problems for Avicennan ideas, they do not address the important issue of why his thought remained so influential for such a long period of time. In the 20th and 21st centuries, Avicenna has been attacked by some contemporary Arab Muslim thinkers in search of a new rationalism within Arab culture, one that champions Averroes against Avicenna.

The Cultural Consulate of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran has organised the fourth lifelong learning media workshop about the achievements of the Islamic Republic of  Iran, in cooperation with the Uganda Journalists Association.

The workshop, organised and held within the framework of the capacity-building plan of Ugandan media practioners and as a follow-up to the media workshops held before to achieve the following objectives:

(1) enhancing capacities of senior journalists and researchers of the policy-making arena at country level to set and implement innovative strategies and policies for strengthening the lifelong learning system;

Pune is a city located in the west of the Maharashtra state. Once a capital of the vast Maratha Empire, Pune inherits a rich legacy of art and culture. In 1933, the eminent Prabhat Film Company built its studio in Pune. The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) was established in the Prabhat premises in 1960 and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) was established in 1964. With these developments, the city became fertile ground for filmmakers, actors and film technicians. PIFF takes forward this legacy of film culture in the city, with a festival that especially attracts the youth. We are spreading this spirit throughout Maharashtra by conducting satellite festivals in various other cities.

Pune Film Foundation

The Pune Film Foundation was established with the sole purpose of organising a grand international film festival in Pune. PIFF is organised by the Foundation in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra every year. We undertake end-to-end planning and execution of the festival. We also keep infusing newer and better ideas in each edition.
The Foundation has also diversified its work by organising smaller festivals like Film Festivals from Europe. The central thought is to keep giving the audiences of Pune something new and interesting to view. Our motto is to strengthen cultural discourse through cinema.

Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) was started with the idea of building and promoting a healthy film culture in Pune. Our objective is to give film lovers in the city access to global cinema and spark a cultural exchange. With discussions, lectures and master classes on varied topics related to the craft, we try to instil an academic flavour in the festival.

Every edition of PIFF has a unique contemporary theme. Through categories like World Competition, Marathi Competition, Global Cinema, Country Focus and Retrospective, we bring forth quality films from various countries and cultures. An acclaimed international jury decides awards for films in the competitive sections.

The Government of Maharashtra recognised PIFF as its official festival in 2010. PIFF is the only festival that gives international recognition to Marathi cinema. Every year, PIFF continues to grow with the participation of more and more accomplished film personalities, emerging filmmakers and film enthusiasts.

The festival aims to showcase the best of film produced recently and in the past, in India and other parts of the world, to the city of Aurangabad and its film buffs. This festival is a platform for aspiring filmmakers, technicians, artists and young film enthusiasts to encourage them to learn and understand artistic as well as technical aspects of cinema. Invest to prevent violence against women and girls," for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, which will be taking events from November 25, 2023, to December 10, 2023.

The UN Secretary-General led initiative was lauched in 2008 with the goal of assisting the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which was led by civil society. UNITE, an initiative run by UN Women, urges governments, the private sector, the media, women's organizations, civil society, and the UN system to work together to combat the global epidemic of violence against women and girls. This year's 2023 global theme for the16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence is "UNITE! The Iranian Film Festival will be held in Nandan, India, by the Culture House of I.R.Iran, New Delhi in collaboration with Cine Center Calcutta for two days from October 12^th  &13^th 2023 .

 In this two-day festival, three Iranian films will be screened, Henas, Darkob and No prior Appointment.

 The movie Henas, which tells the story of the martyr Dariush Rezainejad's life, is directed by Hossein Darabi and written by Ehsan Thaghafi, which will be screened at the Calcutta Film Festival on  October 12, 2023

 Maryla Zarei and Behrouz Shoaibi are the two main actors of the film Hanas, who have played roles in this movie along with Vahid Rahbani, Siavash Tahmourth, Solmaz Ghani, Amin Miri, Alireza Naini and Kausar Heydari (young actor). Rezainejad calls the film "Hanas" a page of the history of Iran and says that I am proud to have played the role of the wife of the martyr Rezainejad.

 The movie No Prior Appointment is an Iranian drama produced in the year 2021, directed by Behrooz Shoaibi and written by Farhad Tawhidi and Mehdi Tarab Beigi. This movie won 2 Crystal Simorghs for the best national film and the best soundtrack at the 40^th Fajr Film Festival. The film without prior appointment is a story about the life of a doctor who returns to Iran from Germany after 30 years to participate in his father's death ceremony.

  The movie Darkoob is a movie directed and written by Behrooz Shoaibi and produced by Seyed Mahmoud Razavi, produced in 2016, which won the award for the best film of the 35th Fajr Festival of Iran.

At the Festival of Libraries 2023, participants will have the opportunity to explore four unique zones, each offering a distinct experience. In the digital displays zone, cutting-edge technology will bring books to life through immersive digital experiences. The podcasts zone will feature captivating audio narratives, showcasing the power of storytelling. The festival recognizes the importance of nurturing a love for reading from an early age. Celebrating Heritage and Knowledge

In order to encourage young artists and pay importance to the Islamic Architectural Heritage of India, Iran Culture House, New Delhi is going to hold a photography competition of the Islamic holy places and Indian shrines. In this event, an effort is made to utilize the experience and efforts of all photographers and to open a new window towards the glorious & historic tombs and Islamic Architecture of India.

Photography themes:

1- Mazaars of India (the connection of Mazaar with its city and people's lives, Area of Mazaar, endowments and gifts in Mazaars)

2- Indian Islamic architecture (including calligraphy, inscriptions, sculpture, tiling, etc.),

Terms & Conditions for participating in the photography contest:

Participation in this festival is free for all photographers.

• Send photos only on WhatsApp number.
• The size of the largest side of the photo should be 2000 pixels. The width or height of any photo should not exceed 2000 pixels.
•  The size of each file should not exceed 2 MB.
• Photos must be saved in JPEG format.
• Photos must be taken by professional cameras, compact or high resolution cell phone cameras. All components used in the photo must be photographed by the photographer.
• Each photographer is allowed to send 3 photos in each section, a total of 6 photos for two sections.
• The photos must be prepared according to the conditions mentioned and each photo has the possibility to participate in one part of the competition.
• The candidate who register & send the work would be considering the owner of that "intellectual property" of the photos. If he was proved faulty at any stage, the legal consequence will be up to the participant.
• The organizer is allowed to use all or part of the accepted photos in publications related to the competition, including books, websites, exhibitions and other related items.
•  No text such as the title of the photo, the name of the photographer or the country, etc. should be included on the photo.
• Participating in this competition means accepting all relevant conditions and the participant waives the right to any objection.
• Photographers whose works make it to the final competition will be issued a certificate of participation by Culture House of the Embassy of I. R. Iran, New Delhi.

Conference on Talib Amuli on February 9

The Institute of Persian research, Aligarh Muslim University, in collaboration with the Iran Culture House, New Delhi is organizing an International Conference on Mohammad Talib Amuli, poet laureate of the court of Emperor Jahangir, on February 9, 2023.

According to Prof Azarmi Dukht Safavi, Honorary Director, Persian Institute said that Talib Amuli was the poet laureate of Jahangir and was the greatest exponent of Indo-Persian style of poetry which later got widespread currency across India.

Prof Mohammad Usman Ghani, Director of the Institute said that the conference will begin at 11 am at the Conference Hall, Faculty of Social Sciences.

He said that an Iranian folk music and poetry recitation programme, Talib Khwani, by Iranian artists Ostad Ali Asghar Rostami, Mortaza Neekzad and Buruz Behrami will also be held later at 12:45 noon.

Prominent pediatrician Dr Hameeda Tariq will be the chief guest while Iranian Cultural Counsellor, Dr Mohammad Ali Rabbani will grace the programme as a special guest. AMU Women’s College principal, Prof Naima Khatoon will be the guest of honour.

In observance of the Persian Language Day and with the joint cooperation of Iran Culture House, New Delhi and the Institute of Indo - Persian Studies, organized an event “Persian Language Day”  at the India International Centre on 26^th September 2022 with the presence of Persian language professors and researchers from Indian universities, Prof. Akhtar Kazmi, President of the above mentioned Institute and Professor of Persian Language at Jawaharlal Nehru University, during his speech, pointed out the close connections between the Persian language and India. In addition to literature, the Persian language in India has also had a significant impact on the lifestyle and thought of Indians, and despite the cultural and national pluralism in India, Persian language has been one of the contributing and connecting elements of the tribes, nationalities and religions in India throughout the past history. Pointing to the impact of the Persian language on the culture and language of the southern and northern regions of India, he added that today the Indian society needs to preserve and continue the life of the Persian language in this land in order to properly understand its culture and the rich heritage of its past.

 “QUDS DAY”

Quds day, officially in Iran know as INTERNATIONAL QUDS DAY, it is an annual event that began in Iran in 1979 and it is also commemorated in several countries in the Arab and Muslim World. To this end, organization of Islamic cooperation (O.I.C) Adopted this day as the National Day of Quds (city) to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and  opposing Zionism as well as Israel’s control of Jerusalem.

It is normally marked on the last Friday of Ramadan by marches and demonstrations around the world, to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and opposing Zionism as well as Israel’s control of Jerusalem.

Quds day is synonym to establishing OPPRESSED MUSLIM PARTY which main function shall be to develop the Muslims and open their eyes to the problem confronting Muslims worldwide and proffer ways to confront this problem with view to bring about united Muslims Ummah whose goal shall be worshipping ALLAH socially, politically, economically and spiritually. It is also not merely a strategic solution for the Palestinian problem, as it to be viewed as a key for solving the world problems; any freedom lover and justice seeker in the world must do it best for the annihilation of the Zionist regime in order to pave the path for the establishment of justice and freedom in the world.

Israel, which gained independence as a modern country in 1948, claims Jerusalem as its capital. But this is not internationally recognized because the ancient city is also the proclaimed capital of the State of Palestine. Jerusalem's unresolved status is one of the core questions at the heart of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

US President Donald Trump’s provocative statements on the occupied Syrian Golan drew a storm of international condemnations and criticism, as many states and parties asserted their rejection of these reckless statements, and at the same time they expressed adherence to the relevant international resolutions, which assert that the Golan have always been and will always remain a part of Syria.

It is almost impossible to see the logic of the Trump administration’s expected recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and possibly moving the U.S. embassy to Israel there—before it even unveils what’s certain to be a controversial plan for Middle East peace, which will be tough enough to sell.

“We therefore call all Muslims worldwide and all peace and freedom lovers to see support for Palestinians, the weak and oppressed throughout the world, as a personal as well as collective obligation. They should also condemn in totality Israeli aggression on innocent civilians, as they are living witnesses of the historical injustice and the deprivation of fundamental human rights by these enemies of humanity. We should encourage abstaining from trading in and buying all goods made by them, severing disharmony and legalizing shedding of blood of fellow Muslims among other measures.

In Iran, the day's parades are sponsored and organized by the government. Events include mass marches and rallies. Senior Iranian leaders give fiery speeches condemning Israel, as well as the U.S. government. The crowds respond with chants of "Death to Israel", and "Death to America". According to Roger Howard, many Iranians under the age of 30 continue to participate in Quds Day events, though proportionately less than those on the streets. He adds that many Iranian students on campus say in private that the Arab–Israeli conflict has "nothing to do with us."

Quds Day protests have been held in parts of the Middle East and in London and Berlin and the United States. Marches in London have drawn up to 3,000 people, while Berlin saw 1,600 protestors in 2018. Rallies were held in at least 18 cities across the United States in 2017

Islamic and human right activists worldwide even among the Jews keep the spirit of Quds Day alive by demonstrations, write ups and lectures in major cities.”

The Quds Day is a universal day; it is not an exclusive day for Quds itself.

Iranian politicians abidingly attend Quds Day rallies and deliver anti-Israel diatribes to showcase their steadfast commitment to the regime’s opposition to Israel. Tehran’s May 2019 Quds Day festivities were centered around Iran’s rejection of the Trump administration’s forthcoming Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, branded as “the deal of the century.” The procession featured numerous examples of incitement, including demonstrators burning American and Israeli flags and effigies of President Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In remarks to reporters, President Rouhani declared, "Palestinians will definitely emerge victorious in confrontation with the Zionist aggressors. … The issue of Deal of the Century will undoubtedly turn into the bankruptcy of the century and will certainly not yield results."

Following the rally, the participants issued a communique in which they vowed to reject negotiations and back armed “resistance” as the only viable path to advance the Palestinian national movement. The statement proclaimed, “Liberation of the al-Quds and all other Palestinian territories from the Zionist (Israel) occupation is the main goal of the Islamic world. The only way to settle the issue of Palestine is to press ahead with resistance, to allow for the return of all displaced Palestinians from around the world to their motherland, and to hold a free referendum to decide the fate of their country."

Quds Day in 2020 took place on Friday, May 22. Iran, which has been especially hard hit by the coronavirus, weighed canceling the 2020 demonstrations or moving them online. Ultimately, Iran decided to put on a modified Quds Day, which underscored that even a pandemic would not deter the Iranian regime from holding its annual display of demonization of Israel. 

Ahead of the 2020 Quds Day, the Office of Iran’s Supreme Leader also released an anti-Semitic poster calling for “the final solution: resistance until referendum,” evoking Nazi-era rhetoric. The poster depicted Jerusalem following a Muslim reconquest with a poster of slain former IRGC-Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani prominently displayed on the city’s walls.

It is a day for the oppressed to rise and stand up against the arrogant. “IMAM KHOMEINI”

The International Exhibition of Quran and Islamic Heritage is going to be organized by the International Microfilm Center in collaboration with Culture House Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, New Delhi, Maulana Azad National Open University, Urdu Literature Library, Siasat, Urdu Daily and Jamia Nizamia Hyderabad at the Salar Jung Museum in Hyderabad.

The International Exhibition of the Holy Quran will be held in India in order to revive the art of writing and introducing the ancient methods of calligraphy along with the unique collections of copies of the Holy Quran.

Sixty exquisite manuscripts, fifteen copies with the subject of Quranic sciences and 160 works by Indian and Iranian artists will be exhibited for the visitors in this exhibition.

About 10 Indian artists from different cities of the country and three prominent Iranian artists will participate in the International Exhibition of the Holy Quran and Dr. Mohd Ali Rabbani the Cultural Counselor Embassy of I.R.Iran New Delhi will also attend it.

 The exhibition of the holy art will be for five days i.e. from 26th to 30th April 2022 on the western side of the Hyderabad War Museum in the Mir Abbas Yar Jang Hall.

In addition to Cultural, Scientific and Religious figures, the opening of the exhibition will be attended by Mr. Mohd Mahmood Ali, the Hon’ble Home Minister of Hyderabad, Prof. Seyed Ain ul-Hassan the Vice Chancellor of the Maulana Azad National University Hyderabad, Media, Personalities and prominent figures of the state.

In this holy month of Ramadan eminent Calligraphers and Islamic Miniaturists are coming from Islamic Republic of Iran and will remain in India from 16-30 April, 2022. Various programs will be organized throughout India.

Sa’di Shirazi, globally-renowned Iranian Poet

Many of the masterpieces of Persian literature have been translated into several world languages. Nonetheless, none of these translated literary works have drawn the attention of Westerners as much as the two well-known works of Shaikh Sa’di, that is, “Golestan” and “Boostaan”. In the view of the contemporary researcher and translator, Dr. Jalal Sattari, Persian language which is rich in metaphors, similes, and literary depictions, and differs from European languages, continues to attract admirers in the West. Sa’di, who travelled widely and was familiar with a wide range of cultures, has used simple language in his works, in contrast to his contemporaries. Hence, study of the translations of the works of Sa’di in other languages is highly interesting for foreign readers. However, simplicity and fluency of the literary works of Sa’di cannot be the sole reason behind his international popularity. The important secret behind this global fame is that Sa’di guides readers toward ethereal values, wisdom and prudence which are principally founded on altruism. In fact, the main reason behind the attraction of Westerners, especially Western literati, toward the works of Sa’di is the ethical teachings which are embedded in his works that maintain no motivation other than altruism and respect for mankind’s dignity. Sa’di is truly a globally renowned poet, who belongs to the entire mankind.

The first poet, whose works were translated into European languages in the year 1634 AD, was Sa’di. Initially, Andre Dorier translated the book Golestan into French language. Although there were a few shortcomings in this translation, it was considered the first step to this end. A year later, by reference to the French translation of this book, the Golestan was translated to German, Latin, and English languages. Throughout the waning years of 17th century, when direct criticism of the French ruling system was not common, the Golestan was used to set the stage for advising kings. The French poet and author, La Fonteyn, pursued this goal by publication of the second collection of his stories in the year 1694 AD.

Forte, who lived in 1747 AD, is considered as the founder of philosophical anecdotes. In fact, prior to him, no literary figure or philosopher in Europe had presented philosophical anecdotes. Meanwhile, Forte’s anecdotes are rooted in the works of Sa’di. In principle, Sa’di led the way for emergence of a new literary genre in Europe; as Rockert, under the influence of the famous Iranian Gnostic poet, Mowlana Jalal od-Din Roumi, composed odes in the European and German literature. Moreover, two acclaimed European literati, namely Victor Hugo of France and Goethe of Germany, were both inspired by Sa’di.

The French poet, Maurice Barres, is also one of the literary figures, who under the influence of Sa’di, writes one of his masterpieces. In his book, this French poet reminds that he still likes roses, because they have come from the city of Shiraz- which was the birthplace of Sa’di.

Andre Gide also knew of the works of Sa’di and was under their influence. His signature book, Fruits of the Earth, starts with a poem from the Iranian poet, Hafez Shirazi, and ends with a poem from Sa’di. Gide, under the influence of the Golestan, divided his signature book into eight chapters. In the year 1921, the German thinker, Friedrich Roesen, published a book, which included the 8th chapter of Golestan and other works of Sa’di.

In the year 1967, the Swiss translator and researcher, Rudolf Gelpke, published a selection of Golestan’s anecdotes. He has not translated the Golestan into German and has in fact narrated the contents of Golestan’s anecdotes in German language. Goethe became familiar with Farsi literature as of 1792 AD after reading a translated script of Golestan. Thereafter, he became highly interested in Persian literature. His enthusiasm in Farsi literature reached its peak in the year 1814, after studying the collection of poems of Hafez Shirazi. Goethe has benefited from the words of wisdom in Golestan in writing his collection of poems. In the view of the 19th Century American author and thinker, Emerson, the Iranian poet, Sa’di, has spoken in the language of all nations and his works are always fresh like the works of Homer, Shakespeare, Cervantes, and Montini. Emerson believes that the ethical guidelines presented in Golestan are a manifestation of international rules and regulations.

According to the French philosopher, Ernest Renan, the wisdom of Sa’di; the delicacy of his thoughts which boost the spirit; the mild humor which Sa’di makes use of to criticize the deviations of mankind; are all the factors which make Sa’di dear to us. The French translator, Garcen de Tacy, says Sa’di is the only Iranian author who is famous among the masses of people in Europe. Sa’di is the symbol of Iranian culture and Persian language. In the view of innumerable researchers, Saudi is an intra-cultural figure. He traveled to many countries, and was familiar with different cultures.

He traveled to Turkistan, the Subcontinent, and North Africa. He gained countless experiences from foreign cultures, which have been reflected upon in the works of Sa’di, especially Golestan.

Sa’di even influenced common people in remote regions. The famous North African traveler Ibn-e Batuta, in his travelogue, narrates that in his journey to West China, he saw a boatman who was reciting the poems of Sa’di in Persian language in his boat, which shows the profound influence of influence of Sa’di on Eastern culture.

Last but not least, what has led to the global popularity of Sa’di is the delicacy of his works and his profound understanding of humanity based on Islamic teachings.

The contemporary world is in need of Sa’di, because the current world is in need of interaction of cultures and civilizations; and the works of Sa’di completely meet this need.

Iranian Calligraphy Exhibition at AAFT School of Animation

 Marwah Studio, Noida

In order to acquaint more Indian students and artists with Islamic art, an exhibition and workshop on calligraphy and illumination was co-organized by Iran Culture House, New Delhi and AAFT School of Animation, , at the College of Arts affiliated to Marwah Studio, Noida on 21^st April 2022. one of the renowned media centers of Indian art & Cinema in New India. At the opening ceremony of the program, Dr. Sandip Marwa, President of the Institute, and Dr. Rabbani, Cultural Counselor of Iran in Delhi spoke about the potential of art for cultural cooperation between Iran and India.

Persian art or Iranian art has one of the richest art heritages in world history and has been strong in many media including architecture, painting, weaving, pottery, calligraphy, metalworking and sculpture,” said Dr. Sandeep Marwah President of AAFT School of Animation at the inauguration of exhibition of miniature paintings from Iran at AAFT campus.

Dr. Mohd. Ali Rabbani, Cultural Counselor Iran Culture House, Embassy of Iran as the capacity of Chief Guest of the event said:

 “Characteristics of Persian miniature painting include the use of sharply defined areas of bright, pure color and the exacting depiction of detail in both background and foreground; these distinguish Persian painting from European painting,”

The exhibition was presented by an Iranian Artist Mr. Goordraz Azad Panahi and Mr. Hamzah Ali Quadari also visiting professors in Iran Universities. The guest also release the books prepared by the students of AAFT School of Animation.

Forty different paintings depicting the art and culture of Iran were displayed for the students and faculty to learn and acquaint themselves. A workshop how to paint miniatures was conducted by Mr. Goodraz Azad Panahi & Mr. Hamzah Ali Quadari. 3 Issue of Cultural Glimpses of  Iran published by Iran Culture House was also released on the occasion.

Later Dr. Sandeep Marwah honoured the guest with the life membership of World Peace Development and Research Foundation. Director Ashish Garg presented vote of thanks and conducted the program. The event was supported by International Chamber of Media and Entertainment Industry & Indo Iran Film and Cultural Forum.

Commemoration of Persian Poet Farid od-Din Attar Neishaburi

Following is a special feature on this great Gnostic whose works remain alive to this day despite the passing of 8 centuries.

Born in northeastern Iran in 540 AH, around 1145 AD, and named Farid od-Din by his father who was a chemist and perfumer, as the surname “Attar” suggests, he received an excellent education in various fields. He practiced the profession of pharmacy and personally attended to a very large number of patients, while composing poetry under the penname “Attar”. At the same time, he started writing books in versified Persian such as Mosibat-Namah, Ilahi-Namah, and Khosrow-Namah. The people he treated used to confide their troubles in him and this affected him deeply to the extent that he eventually left his profession and traveled widely - to Baghdad, Basra, Kufa, Mecca, Medina, Damascus, Khwarezm, and the cities of northern India, meeting with Sufi leaders, before returning to his hometown, as a person well-versed in mysticism and Gnosis. The thoughts, as is evident in Attar’s works, reflect the evolution of the Sufi movement. The starting point is the idea of the soul’s awaited release from the physical body and return to its source in the other metaphysical world, can be experienced during the present life in mystic union attainable through inward purification. Although Attar wrote the prose work “Tazkerat-al-Awliya” on the life of Gnostics and Mystics, the finest mirror of his thoughts is the long poetical work “Manteq at-Tayr” or the Discourse of the Birds.

In this work, the birds, led by the hoopoe, go in search of their king, Simurgh or the legendry Phoenix. Their quest takes them through seven valleys, in the first of which a hundred difficulties assail them. They undergo many trials as they try to free themselves of what is precious to them in order to change their state. Once successful, they ask for a refreshing drink to dull the effects of dogma, belief, and unbelief on their lives. In the second valley, the birds give up reason for love and, with a thousand hearts to sacrifice, continue their quest for discovering the Simurgh. The third valley confounds the birds, especially when they discover that their worldly knowledge has become completely useless and their understanding has become ambivalent. There are different ways of crossing this valley, and all birds do not fly alike. Understanding can be arrived at variously—some have found the Mihrab or the prayer niche of the mosque, others the idol. The fourth valley is introduced as the valley of detachment, i.e., detachment from desire to possess, and the wish to discover. The birds begin to feel that they have become part of a universe that is detached from their physical reality. In their new world, the planets are as minute as sparks of dust and elephants are not distinguishable from ants. It is not until they enter the fifth valley that they realize that unity and multiplicity are the same. And as they have become entities in a vacuum with no sense of eternity, they realize that the One and Only Almighty God is beyond multiplicity and eternity. Stepping into the sixth valley, the birds become astonished at the beauty of the Beloved. Experiencing extreme sadness and dejection, they feel that they know nothing, and understand nothing. They are not even aware of themselves. Only thirty birds reach the abode of the Simurgh or the Phoenix. But there is no Phoenix anywhere to see. The chamberlain keeps them waiting for the Phoenix long enough for the birds to realize that they themselves are the Si-Murgh, that is, “Thirty Birds, since in Persian “Si” is "Thirty” and “Murgh” means “Bird”. The seventh valley is the valley of deprivation, forgetfulness, dumbness, deafness, and death. The present and future lives of the thirty successful birds become shadows chased by the celestial Sun, as they become absorbed in the Sea of His existence.

Attar is one of the most famous mystic poets of Iran. His works were the inspiration for the famous Gnostic and Persian poet Mowlna Jalal od-Din Balkhai Rumi and many other poets. Attar, along with Sanai Ghaznavi, had the greatest influences on Rumi, who has mentioned both of them with the highest esteem several times in his poetry. Attar inspired poets and mystics in the Subcontinent as well as in Central Asia and Anatolia, where Persian language and Iranian culture were dominant. Later his works began to be translated in European languages, to the extent that he has received huge popularity among Western Orientalists as one of the most striking meteors in the Eastern sky of mysticism. Many of these Orientalists’ works have been devoted to researching the works of Attar. From almost two hundred years ago, Europeans tried to introduce Attar's work to the Western society. Silvestere de Sacy was one of the first European scholars in introducing Attar to the West. In 1816, he translated the poems of the Pand-Namah in Paris. The second translation of Pand-Namah was brought out in Latin by Gabriel GaiTelin in 1835 and published in Helinski, Finland. Baron Eric Hermelin translated the Pand-Namah in Swedish language in 1929, followed by the translation of Attar’s prose work Tazkerat-al-Awliya in four volumes during the period of 1931-43. The famous English scholar A. J. Arberry translated the Tazkera of Attar into English under the title of "Muslim Saints and Mystics".

The Tazkerat al-Awliya has also been translated into the Turkish, Urdu, and several other languages, which are proof of the popularity of Farid od-Din Attar’s thoughts and

poetry.

The seventh valley is the valley of deprivation, forgetfulness, dumbness, deafness, and death. The present and future lives of the thirty successful birds become shadows chased by the celestial Sun, as they become absorbed in the Sea of His existence.

Attar is one of the most famous mystic poets of Iran. His works were the inspiration for the famous Gnostic and Persian poet Mowlna Jalal od-Din Balkhai Rumi and many other poets. Attar, along with Sanai Ghaznavi, had the greatest influences on Rumi, who has mentioned both of them with the highest esteem several times in his poetry. Attar inspired poets and mystics in the Subcontinent as well as in Central Asia and Anatolia, where Persian language and Iranian culture were dominant. Later his works began to be translated in European languages, to the extent that he has received huge popularity among Western Orientalists as one of the most striking meteors in the Eastern sky of mysticism. Many of these Orientalists’ works have been devoted to researching the works of Attar. From almost two hundred years ago, Europeans tried to introduce Attar's work to the Western society. Silvestere de Sacy was one of the first European scholars in introducing Attar to the West. In 1816, he translated the poems of the Pand-Namah in Paris. The second translation of Pand-Namah was brought out in Latin by Gabriel GaiTelin in 1835 and published in Helinski, Finland. Baron Eric Hermelin translated the Pand-Namah in Swedish language in 1929, followed by the translation of Attar’s prose work Tazkerat-al-Awliya in four volumes during the period of 1931-43. The famous English scholar A. J. Arberry translated the Tazkera of Attar into English under the title of "Muslim Saints and Mystics".

The Tazkerat al-Awliya has also been translated into the Turkish, Urdu, and several other languages, which are proof of the popularity of Farid od-Din Attar’s thoughts and poetry.

The School of Languages, Linguistics & Indology (SLLI), Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) today organized one day International webinar on “Indology & Indian Knowledge System, Reflected in World Literature: Adaptation, Translations and Commentaries” on March 23.

Dr Mohammad Ali Rabbani, Cultural Counsellor Embassy of I.R.Iran, New Delhi was the Chief Guest and Prof. Syed Ainul Hasan, Vice-chancellor presided over.  Prof. Amina Kishore , Former Dean, SLL&I,  MANUU and  Dr. Mohammad Kazim Khadumi  of Iran were the guests of honour.

Prof. Syed Ainul Hassan in his Presidential address highlighted the traditional Indian literary system and Indo-Iranian relations. He also spoke about “Panchtantra” and said that thoughts expressed in “Panchtantra” have illuminated the literary world. Dr Mohammad Ali Rabbani pointed out the similarities between Indo-Iranian civilization and culture.

Dr. Mohammad Kazim Khadumi and Prof. Amina Kishore also spoke on the occasion referring to ancient books of India and religious scriptures.  Prof. Amina said the ancient Indian knowledge system promoted tolerance, peaceful co-existence and equality.

Prof. Aziz Bano, Dean, SLL & I & programme director delivered the welcome address. Prof. Shahid Naukhez Azmi, Head, Department of Persian addressed the inaugural and Prof. Shugufta Shaheen, Head, Dept. of English proposed vote of thanks.

Nizami Ganjavi

Nizami Ganjavi (Persian: نظامی گنجوی, romanized: Niẓāmī Ganjavī, lit. 'Niẓāmī of Ganja') (c. 1141–1209), Nizami Ganje'i, Nizami, or Nezāmi, whose formal name wasJamal ad-Dīn Abū Muḥammad Ilyās ibn-Yūsuf ibn-Zakkī, was a 12th-century PersianMuslim poet. Nezāmi is considered the greatest romantic epic poet in Persian literature, who brought a colloquial and realistic style to the Persian epic. His heritage is widely appreciated and shared by Afghanistan, Republic of Azerbaijan, Iran, the Kurdistan region and Tajikistan.

Life

His personal name was Ilyas and his chosen pen-name was Nezami (also spelled as Nizami and Neẓāmi). He was born of an urban background in Ganja (Seljuq empire, now Republic of Azerbaijan) and is believed to have spent his whole life in South Caucasus. According to De Blois, Ganja was a city which at that time had predominantly an Iranian population. The Armenian historian Kirakos Gandzaketsi (c. 1200 – 1271) mentions that: "This city was densely populated with Iranians and a small number of Christians". Because Nezami was not a court poet, he does not appear in the annals of the dynasties. Tazkerehs, which are the compilations of literary memoirs that include maxims of the great poets along with biographical information and commentary of styles refer to him briefly. Much of this material in these Tazkerehs are based on legends, anecdotes, and hearsays. Consequently, few facts are known about Nezami's life, the only source being his own work, which does not provide much information on his personal life.

Parents

Nezami was orphaned early and was raised by his maternal uncle Khwaja Umar who took responsibility for him and afforded him an excellent education. His mother, namedRa'isa, was of Kurdish origin. His father, whose name wasYusufis mentioned once by Nezami in his poetry. In the same verse, Nezami mentions his grandfather's name asZakki. In part of the same verse, some have taken the wordMu'ayyadas a title for Zakki while others have interpreted it as the name of his great grandfather. Some sources have stated that his father might be possibly from Qom. Nezami is variously mentioned as a Persian and/or Iranian.

Family

Nezami was married three times. His first wife was a Kipchak slave girl which was sent to him by Fakhr al-Din Bahramshah, the ruler of Darband, as part of a larger gift. According to Iraj Bashiri she became Nezami's "most beloved" wife. His only sonMohammadwas from this wife. She died after "Khosrow and Shirin" was completed. Mohammad was seven at the time. Nezami mentions his son again in Layli and Majnun adding that now this son is 14 years old and "apple of my eyes". In "Haft Peykar" (Seven Beauties), he also mentions and advises his son about taking more responsibility as the father was growing more frail.

Some modern writers in the late 20th century have claimed that this wife was calledAfaq. Vahid Dastgerdi seems to be the first writer to propose this name for Nezami's first wife, but Saeed Nafisi (at the same time) and a recent source have challenged this interpretation of the corresponding verse in Nezami's work and the assumption thatAfaqwas the real name of his wife and have taken theAfaqin that verse to simply mean "horizon" rather than a proper name. Strangely enough, Nezami's two other wives, too, died prematurely – the death of each coinciding with the completion of an epic, prompting the poet to say, "God, why is it that for every mathnavi I must sacrifice a wife!".

Education

Nezami was not a philosopher in the sense of Avicenna or an expositor of theoretical Sufism in the sense of Ibn 'Arabi. However, he is regarded as a philosopher and gnostic who mastered various fields of Islamic thoughts which he synthesized in a way that brings to mind the traditions of later Hakims such as Qutb al-Din Shirazi.

Often referred to by the honorific Hakim ("the Sage"), Nezami is both a learned poet and master of a lyrical and sensuous style. About Nezami's prodigious learning there is no doubt. Poets were expected to be well versed in many subjects; but Nezami seems to have been exceptionally so. His poems show that not only he was fully acquainted with Arabic and Persian literatures and with oral and written popular and local traditions, but was also familiar with such diverse fields as mathematics, astronomy, astrology, alchemy, medicine, botany, Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic theory and law, Iranian myths and legends, history, ethics, philosophy and esoteric thought, music, and the visual arts. His strong character, social sensibility, and knowledge of oral and written historical records, as well as his rich Persian cultural heritage unite pre-Islamic and Islamic Iran into the creation of a new standard of literary achievement. Being a product of the Iranian culture of the time, he not only created a bridge between pre-Islamic and Islamic Iran, but also between Iran and the whole ancient world.

Influences and literary scene

The recent discovery and publication of the anthology titledNozhat al-Majalescontains Persian language quatrains from Nizami and 115 other poets from the northwestern Iran (Arrān, Šarvān, Azerbaijan; including 24 poets from Ganja alone) during the same era. Unlike other parts of Persia, where the poets mostly belonged to higher echelons of society such as scholars, bureaucrats, and secretaries, a good number of poets in the northwestern areas rose from among the common people with working-class backgrounds, and they frequently used colloquial expressions in their poetry. Accordingly, the book demonstrates the social conditions at the time, reflecting the full spread of Persian language and the culture in the region, which is evidenced by the common use of spoken idioms in poems and the professions of many of the poets. The influence of the northwestern Pahlavi language, for example, which had been the spoken dialect of the region, is clearly observed in the poems contained in this anthology. However, at the same time, the Caucasus region was entertaining a unique mixture of ethnic cultures. Khaqani's mother was a Nestorian Christian, Mojir Baylqani's mother was an Armenian, and Nezami's mother was a Kurd. Their works reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of the region.

According to literary scholar Chelkowski,"it seems that Nezami's favorite pastime was reading Ferdawsi's monumental epic Shahnameh (The book of Kings). Nezami mentioned Ferdowsi as the Sage (Hakim) and Knower/Wise (daanaa) and the great master of discourse, "who has decorated words like new bride." Nezami advises the son of the Shirvanshah to read the Shah-nama and to remember the meaningful sayings of the wise. Nezami used theShahnamehas a source in his three epics ofHaft Peykar, Khosrow and ShirinandEskandar-Nameh.

The story ofVis and Raminalso had an immense influence on Nezami. Although Nezami takes the bases for most of his plots from Ferdowsi, but the basis for his rhetoric comes from Gorgani. This is especially noticeable inKhosrow and Shirin, which is of the same meter and imitates some scenes fromVis and Ramin. Nezami's concern with astrology also has a precedent in an elaborate astrological description of the night sky inVis and Ramin. Nezami had a paramount influence on the romantic tradition, and Gorgani can be said to have initiated much of the distinctive rhetoric and poetic atmosphere of this tradition, with the absence of the Sufi influences, which are seen in Nezami's epic poetry.

The first monumental work of Nezami, theMakhzan al-Asraris influenced by Sanai'sHadikat al-Hakika.^[38][5][39] Nezami acknowledges this, but considers his work to be superior. The main similarities between Sanai's poem and Nezami's are in its ethico-philosophical genre, although Nezami uses a different metre and organized the whole work in a different fashion. Khaqani Sherwani daring imagery, was to have a momentous influence on Nezami Ganjavi and through the latter on Persian poetry in general.

Works

Nezami lived in an age of both political instability and intense intellectual activity, which his poems reflect; but little is known about his life, his relations with his patrons, or the precise dates of his works, as the many legends built up around the poet color the accounts of his later biographers. Nezami was a master of theMasnavistyle (double-rhymed verses).

• TheKhamsaorPanj Ganj,Nizami's main poetical work, for which he is best known, is a set of five long narrative poems known as theKhamsa(خمسه, 'Quintet or Quinary') orPanj Ganj(پنج گنج, 'Five Treasures'):

• Makhzan-ol-Asrâr (مخزن‌الاسرار, 'The Treasury or Storehouse of Mysteries'), 1163 (some date it 1176)
• Khosrow o Shirin (خسرو و شیرین, 'Khosrow and Shirin'), 1177–1180
• Leyli o Majnun (لیلی و مجنون, 'Layla and Majnun'), 1192
• Eskandar-Nâmeh (اسکندرنامه, 'The Book of Alexander'), 1194 or 1196–1202
• Haft Peykar (هفت پیکر, 'The Seven Beauties'), 1197

The first of these poems,Makhzan-ol-Asrâr, was influenced by Sanai's (d. 1131) monumentalGarden of Truth. The four other poems are medieval romances. Khosrow and Shirin, Bahram-e Gur, and Alexander the Great, who all have episodes devoted to them in Ferdowsi'sShahnameh, appear again here at the center of three of four of Nezami's narrative poems. The adventure of the paired lovers, Layla and Majnun, is the subject of the second of his four romances, and derived from Arabic sources. In all these cases, Nezami reworked the material from his sources in a substantial way.

The 45th International Kolkata Book Fair will start from February 28 and will go on till March 13. The fair will be inaugurated on February 28 by the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee.

As part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) celebrations marking the 75th year of India's Independence, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is organising a three-day craft fair of renowned craftsmen exclusively for the diplomatic community in the national capital.

ICCR President Vinay Sahasrabuddhe said, "A three-day long craft mela (craft fair) will be organised from February 23 to 25 at Chandni Bagh in Bikaner House. The event will be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture, Meenakshi Lekhi. The inauguration will mark the presence of about 70-75 head of foreign missions in India and few Indian dignitaries."

According to Sahasrabuddhe, 22 craftsmen from 11 states will exhibit five forms of Indian traditional art forms -- Crafts (Bamboo Art), Textiles, Traditional and Folk Art, Beauty Aromatics and Recycled Products.

Iran celebrates Fathers Day; birth anniv. of Imam Ali

Imam Ali, whose birthday is an occasion to celebrate manhood, is respected by both Sunni and Shia Muslims for his honesty, belief, courage, knowledge, loyalty to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and devotion to Islam. 

He was born in Kaaba in Mecca, Arabia (now Saudi Arabia), in 599 AD to Abu Talib, an uncle of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Fatimah Bint Asad.

He was the first man (and the second person after the Prophet’s wife Khadijah) to convert to Islam after Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received his divine revelation and declared Islam in public based on Allah’s order. 

From 610 AD to 622 AD, Imam Ali spent much of his time providing for the needs of believers in Mecca, especially the poor, by distributing what he had among them and helping them with their daily chores.

On the night of the Prophet’s emigration to Medina, knowing that his enemies were plotting to assassinate him, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked Imam Ali (PBUH) to take his place and sleep in his bed. The Prophet then left Mecca and reached Medina safely several days later (his arrival marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar). When the plotters entered Muhammad’s house with drawn daggers, they were deeply surprised to find Imam Ali (PBUH), whom they did no harm.

In 623 AD, the Imam married the Prophet’s daughter Fatimah (SA), who gave birth to Imam Hasan (PBUH) and Imam Hussein (PBUH), the second and third Imams of Shia Muslims. 
Imam Ali (PBUH) took part in battles of Badr, Ohud, Khandaq, Khaybar, and many other battles that took place in the early years of Islam.

While returning to Medina from his last pilgrimage in 632 AD, the Prophet made certain statements at Ghadir Khumm about Imam Ali (PBUH). According to both traditions, the Prophet said that Imam Ali (PBUH) was his inheritor and brother and that whoever accepted the Prophet as his mawla (master) should also accept Imam Ali (PBUH) as his mawla.

Imam Ali (PBUH) also collected all the Prophet’s explanations about Qur’an verses and the reasons behind their revelation.

In the time of three caliphs- i.e. Abu Bakr, Umar ibn al-Khattab, and Uthman ibn Affan- Imam Ali (PBUH) had no official place. But in cases, they asked him for any advice which was in the interest of the Islamic community, he did not hesitate.

 Imam Ali"s Holy Shrine in Najaf covered with flowers on the occasion of his birthday anniversary.

When the third caliph was killed, people gave their allegiance to Imam Ali (PBUH) and he was chosen as Caliph.

During his caliphate of nearly four years and nine months, Imam Ali (PBUH) followed, exactly, the way of the Prophet and began many different types of reforms. Naturally, these reforms were against the interests of certain parties that sought their own benefit.

As a result, a group of the companions made a pretext of the death of the third caliph to raise their heads in opposition and began to revolt and rebel against the Imam.

On the 19th of Ramadan in 661 AD, he was struck in the back of the head with a poisoned sword while praying in the mosque of Kufa. He passed away two days later and was buried in Najaf, Iraq.

His shrine in Najaf is one of the most important pilgrimage sites among Muslims.

Numerous short sayings of Imam Ali (PBUH) have become part of general Islamic culture and are quoted as aphorisms and proverbs in daily life.

In the 10th century one of the outstanding Shia scholars, Sayyid Sharif al-Raḍi, assembled many of Imam Ali’s sermons, letters, and short sayings dealing with various subjects in the book Nahj al-Balaghah (The Path of Eloquence), which became one of the most widely read and influential books in the Islamic world.

Father"s Day in the Persian calendar coincides with the birth anniversary of Imam Ali (PBUH) for, in Islam, parents are given high status, and the Holy Quran has frequently urged Muslims to honor, respect, and obey their parents.

Father"s Day is a national holiday in Iran. Many seek ways to ways to express their gratitude and honoring their fathers on this day.

They take the opportunity to spend more time with their fathers and grandfathers, often expressing their gratitude and paying respects with flowers and gifts.

Fajr International Film Festival is one of the most important cultural events in Iran, which is held annually and every year in mid-February; A festival that has been held continuously since 1982 and in commemoration of the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in February 1978.

The festival is organized by the Farabi Cinema Foundation, which organizes it under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

Crystal Simorgh is the name of the special prize of this festival, in which the participants compete in the competitive sections to win it.

Fajr International Theater Festival is one of the most important theater festivals in Iran, which is held every year on the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in February. The festival is often competitive and has a variety of sections, including a stage performance section, an international section, a radio performance section, a tele-theater section, and a street performance section.

The organizers of this festival; The Performing Arts Center of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, the Iranian Performing Arts Association, and the International Theater Institute are located in Tehran.

Yalda Night or Shab-e Yalda

The last night of autumn (of the Iranian calendar) and the first night of winter, which is the longest night in the whole year, and since then the nights begin to get short and the days become longer.

In the past, Iranians celebrated several different days as the beginnings of the year, one of which was the first day of the month of Dey, coinciding with 22 January, which marked the end of one cosmic time cycle and the beginning of another time cycle and the beginning of winter. This night was known as the eve of the birthday of Izadmehr or Mitra, the rebirth of the Sun, and the symbol of Mehr. Yalda is the eve of the beginning of winter and corresponds to the night of the beginning of the great chelleh of winter. Traditionally the Iranian people spend this night together with family and friends until late midnight and at times until the next morning. Iranians of different regions decorate the special table of this night with a collection of summer and autumn fruits like pomegranates and watermelons and try to stay awake throughout the longest night of the year by eating fruits and nuts and telling stories and reading the poems of Iranian poets like Hafez and Ferdowsi. It is commonly believed that by staying awake in this night until the rising of the winter sun people would remove the demon of darkness from their lives.

On December 1^st 2021, Dr. Mohammad Ali Rabbani, Cultural Counselor of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Delhi, visited the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Delhi while visiting different departments of the Faculty and he exchanged views with officials, professors and Ph.D. students. In the Dept of history department a meeting was held with Prof. Sima Bawa, head of the history department, and  two Professors, as well as a number of Students of this Faculty.

The Basij Organization is one of the five forces of the Revolutionary Guards that is responsible for gathering, managing and organizing the people's volunteer forces in line with organizational goals. This force, also known as the Basij Organization of the Oppressed or the Basij Resistance Force, was formed on December 26, 1980 by the order of Ruhollah Khomeini (God’s mercy be upon him).

Akuapem,Iran Embassy partner to promote socioeconomic dev of their people

The Akuapem Kyidomman Council, Mamfe, in the Eastern Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran Embassy in Ghana, are seeking to foster partnership to promote socioeconomic development of their people.

This came to light when the Head of Mission of Islamic Republic of Iran Embassy in Ghana,Bjan Gerami and his entourage, paid a courtesy call on the Council on Saturday.

Hundreds of the aged in the community went through the medical screening,including laboratory tests and those with serious conditions were referred to the Clinic in Accra for further attention.

The Mamfehene and Kyidomhene of Akuapem, Osabarima Ansah Sasraku III,expressed profound gratitude to the Iran Embassy for the outreach medical care.

He urged the Iran Embassy to make their medical service outreach to the community often for the benefit of the people.

Osabarima Sasraku said the traditional area abounds in a “large army of youth” and the council was developing a proposal for the establishment of skills training and youth centre to unearth their talents, and take them away from deviant behaviours like alcoholism, drug abuse and gambling.

He said the council was,therefore, seeking the support of Iran to make the project a reality, adding “it is our dream that this will come to reality and the edifice will be a symbol of our relationship for years.”

For his part, Mr Gerami commended the Kyidoman Council for the warmth hospitality and promised to collaborate with them for the mutual benefit of the two.

He recalled the long standing good relationship between the government and people of Ghana and Iran and enumerated some projects including the establishment of the clinic to complement the government’s effort in healthcare, rural agricultural project, the Islamic University College to improve access to tertiary education and the provision of scholarship to some Ghanaian students to study in Iran.

The Head of Mission said there were a number of Iranian businesses in the country, who would want to explore business opportunities in the traditional area.

He said the “unlawful sanctions” imposed on Iran by the US government negatively impacted on Iran’s financial system and had limited Iran’s continuous support to communities in need across the globe, including Ghana.

The Medical Director of the Iran Clinc, Dr Seyed Salahatpour, said the medical outreach in the needy communities would be sustained.

An event to review the link between calligraphy Persian, Urdu language & Culture was held on November 3^rd, 2021 in the presence of professors and students of the College of Art of Delhi University, Urdu calligraphy researchers and students of some Islamic schools in Delhi.

In this program, Dr. Mohammad Ali Rabbani, Cultural Counselor Iran in New Delhi, Dr. Ehsanullah Shokrollahi, Director, Persian Research Center, ICH, New Delhi, Massoud Rabbani, Prominent Iranian Calligrapher, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad and Mr. Ikramullah, two Indian calligraphers & Professor Akhlaq Ahan, Persian Department Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi spoke about the characteristics of calligraphy and its linkages with Persian and Urdu culture and literature.

Rabbani in this meeting, while explaining the significance of art in both western and eastern views said that Art having various types of definitions. In Greek philosophy and in Plato's view, art is considered as a mere technique and imaginary perception of phenomena.

He added that in the Eastern view, especially in Iran and India, art was closely related to religion and was interpreted as a spiritual tool. He explained the place of art in Islam.

Dr. Shokrollahi, another speaker at the meeting, raised the question of whether calligraphy is a science or an art. Calligraphy We need to know a lot about it and calligraphy is an art because it seeks beauty. He emphasized that the art of calligraphy during its 1400 years history of Islam has reflected the highest aspects of human thought and spiritual dimensions. He spoke about Calligraphy and its relationship with Iranian Islamic culture and civilization.

Prof. Alhlaq Ahan In his speech, emphasized that calligraphy has a deep connection with human civilization, gave a brief history of calligraphy and said that Qazvin is one of the important centers of calligraphy in Iran and Mir Damad is one of the famous calligraphers in Iran and in Homayoun's time. The art of calligraphy flourished in India because Homayoun had been studying calligraphy in Qazvin for some time. And his son Akbar also established a translation center, and its refinement and calligraphy were done by Indian artists, copies of which are still available in Indian libraries today. In another part of his speech, he said: "Different regions of India have played a role in the prosperity of calligraphy and their style has become famous, such as Bihari calligraphy or monasteries that created their own style, which is known as them."

Mushtaq Ahmad, an Indian calligrapher, also emphasized in his speech that the Nasta'liq script is for Iranians and is taught in the same way in India. He went on to introduce calligraphy training centers in Delhi.

Dr. Massoud Rabbani was another speaker at the meeting. He called love the divine gift from which art is born. Existential philosophy of art is to create love and affection between human beings. Among all the arts, the art of calligraphy is a spiritual ar. The eighth Nasta'liq script was written in two styles in Iran.

 In the final part of the program, Mr. Masoud Rabbani, Mr. Shokrollahi and Mr. Masoud Rabbani, along with 2 Indian calligraphers, taught calligraphy to the interested parties and showed examples of their calligraphy. The opening ceremony of this two-day webinar was attended by Dr. Chandara Shekhra, former Head of the Persian Department, Delhi University, Dr. Haddad Adel, Chairman Sa’di Faoundation, Iran, and Dr. Mohammad Ali Rabbani, Cultural Counselor of Iran in New Delhi.

Prof. Chandra Shekhra called Saadi the pinnacle of Persian poetry and literature and stated that Saadi's studies and research on Saadi's influence on Persian and Urdu poetry and culture are among the necessities related to the study of Persian and Iranian literature and culture in the subcontinent. The Persian department of Delhi University tries to provide academic content in this part of Persian studies every year by holding international seminars and meetings and encouraging prominent professors to present research based articles.

 Dr. Haddad Adel, Chairman Saadi Foundation and President of the Academy of Persian Language and Literature, Iran, gave a description of the characteristics of Saadi's poetry and works, and mentioned its educational and moral themes, as well as the sweetness and psychological expression of Saadi. The head of the Saadi Foundation said that the reason for the popularity of Saadi in India and its geographical scope is due to its pleasantness, beauty, simplicity and of course the melodic and rich content of Saadi's language, which has expressed the realities of life in the most tangible way possible. I addition he has suggested that due to the importance of Saadi's position in India and the influence of prominent Indian Persian poets from this famous Iranian poet, specialized libraries as well as specialized Saadi research centers in cultural centers And activate the university.

Dr. M. Ali Rabbaniwas the opening speaker of this webinar. Perhaps none of the Iranian poets like Saadi - in terms of the extent of influence in India among the Muslims is popular. Because the depth of thought and spiritual dominance of the words of Saadi and Rumi throughout the realm of culture under the influence of Persian culture and literature in India has had such an impact on the thoughts of people and thinkers of its elite that it affects not only religious beliefs, morals, philosophy and mysticism. On the contrary, in the literature of this land, it is still fully felt after centuries and the decline of the Persian language. One of Saadi's imitators, Amir Khosrow Dehlavi, is nicknamed the “Tutiye Hind”. In India and Iran, for at least three centuries, until the rise of Abolfazl Allami, he was a role model for poets and writers. Amir Khosrow's love poems, which are rooted in Saadi's virtues, have the same eloquence and sweetness of Saadi's tradition. Therefore, Amir Khosrow, like Hassan Dehlavi Sajzi, one of the other peaks of Persian lyric poetry and the first generation of Persian speakers of the Indian language, is called Saadi of India.

Forty-three professors from universities in India, Iran, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan presented their papers during the two days of the conference. Twenty-two Iranian professors from different universities of our country were present in this program.

Dr. Mohd Ali Rabbani, the Cultural Counselor, Embassy of I.R. Iran and Head Iran Culture House, New Delhi, is responsible for organizing more than 15 International conferences in Iran and has published more than 50 academic articles in various international journals. He has a doctorate in history from University of Religions (Qom, Iran) and previously served as the editor-in-chief of ‘Society and Culture’ of Iran. He is also in charge of the English quarterly journal ‘Cultural dialogue’ being published in collaboration with JNU, Allama Taba Tabaie University (Iran) and Iran Culture House. Before coming to India, he visited Russia, Tunisia, Italy, Spain, and Turkey, among other countries. He is the honorary member of Iran Society Kolkata and will also be shortly confirmed as the member of Indian History congress.
In this interview, Dr. Rabbani talks about the importance of culture in the relations between Iran and India, the significance of Persian and Sanskrit languages in the relations between the two countries, and impact of Covid-19 on socio-cultural issues and the field of art in Iran. Excerpts
Q. As the Cultural Counselor of the Iran in Delhi, what are your priorities for strengthening the cultural relations between India and Iran?
A. The culture of the two countries has common components and undeniable similarities and has been the main intersection of Iran and India throughout the history of culture and civilization as well as Islam and Hinduism. India has many cultural-artistic connections and affiliations, which are manifested in literature, poetry, painting, architecture, etc. Therefore, today, we are trying to develop interactions between the intellectuals and academics of Iran and India through cultural dialogue and academic cooperation, the development of religious dialogue between Islam and Hinduism between Iran and India, the development of cinematic cooperation. Cooperation in the field of language teaching and written heritage; these are one of the priorities for strengthening and developing cultural relations between the two countries. We have tried to provide the grounds for the implementation of cultural agreements between the two countries, opportunities and suitable platforms to facilitate interactions and communication between the cultural and artistic sectors, especially in the field of cinema, media, which is one of the important capacities in the two countries.
Q. Please tell us about the activities of the Iran Culture House, New Delhi as well as the significance of culture in the relations between India and Iran?
A. Iran Culture House of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Delhi, works on the basis of a cultural agreement concluded between the two countries and is responsible for developing cultural relations between Iran and India based on memorandums, cordialities and the agreements signed between the two countries. Iran Culture House, New Delhi is doing a series of cultural and artistic activities every year within the framework of these agreed views.
The historical and cultural relations between Iran and India are considered to be one of the oldest and deepest human relations. No relation has been as close as the Iranians and Indians among the Indo-European communities. Dozens of books, hundreds of treatises and nearly a thousand articles have been written in Persian, English and other languages ​​about our historical and cultural relations with India. In these relations of several thousand years, India has influenced Iran and Iran had great cultural impact on India. The thought, style and hospitalities of the Iranian people in terms of theology, poetry, mysticism, wisdom and Sufism are similar to the Indian people. Basically, the basis of relations between Iran and India has been cultural for many centuries and culture has been considered as a facilitator of political and trade relations between the two nations.
Q. How do you assess the current state of cultural relations between India and Iran?
A. Although, the relations between Iran and India in the contemporary period have been accompanied by many political and social ups and downs, but this hasn’t disturbed the cultural relations between the two nations with a common, ancient and rich historical background. It is considered that naturally both the Iranian nation and the Indian nation have always had a positive attitude towards each other and the will of the two governments has been formed to preserve this common heritage and the continuation of intellectual and cultural interactions. It is one of the vast capacities that exist between the two countries for cultural cooperation. It is hoped that with a better understanding of the benefits that cultural cooperation can bring to the two great nations of India and Iran, a more appropriate situation of communication and cooperation can be created.
Q. How do you look at the significance of Persian and Sanskrit language in the relations between India and Iran?
A. Sanskrit is the ancient language of the people of India and the religious language of the religions of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, which is linguistically rooted in ancient Persian. The Sanskrit language belongs to the Indo-European language family. The Sanskrit language is very important for the etymology of Persian words. Since the roots of the Pahlavi language are indirectly related to the Avesta and Sanskrit languages, in order to achieve possible reserves in the Pahlavi literature, the need for this language is felt by linguists. Avesta is an example of Iranian literature and a storehouse of several thousand years of our ancient literature. Although today there is a big difference between Persian and Sanskrit, but the existence of many common and similar words between the two languages, indicates these two theories that the root of both languages ​​was the same. Rig Veda and the name of India in the book (Avesta) provide another confirmation of this theory.
One of the most important elements of the common and precious heritage between India and Iran is the Persian language, which for many centuries flowed among the people of this region like a stream of water and thousands of poets, mystics and writers took sips from it and compiled extremely important books and works. At present, thousands of volumes of books in Persian on mysticism, literature, theology, commentary, lexicography, memoirs and history in libraries, cultural and academic centers and universities, and everywhere in this vast land speak of the common history of Iran and India. When the Pahlavi language was the official language of Iran, some Sanskrit books were translated into this language, and when the new Persian language appeared in Iran, it was also accepted in India. Modern Persian played an important role in the development of Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi and Bengali languages. Not to mention that Persian in India has had great poets and writers such as Amir Khusrow, Bidel Dehlavi, Mirza Ghalib and hundreds of other famous and great poets who lived and grew up in India and presented their literary works in this land.
Q. What measures have the Iran Culture House taken to strengthen and expand media cooperation between India and Iran?
A. Today, the media play an important role in portraying and reflecting the existing realities among the nations. In addition to constructive interactions and relations with the media, we intend to provide the media with the necessary content to introduce the culture of Iranian civilization and society, and to provide their direct communication and presence in Iran to better understand the realities in Iran.
Q. Please tell us about the impact of Covid-19 on socio-cultural issues and the field of art?
A. The emergence of Covid-19 is one of the great challenges of contemporary times that have had many effects on human life. This phenomenon in Iran, like other countries, in addition to human casualties and taking the lives of people who each had a role in society and whose death, had many destructive effects on society, including employment, business and education. It has also pursued in the fields of art and culture. Basically, "language" is one of the main elements of culture and every nation is known by its literature. The best way to know nations is through literature. History, civilization, cultural, social and political and economic developments of nations are reflected in its literature. In the interactions between different nations, "literature" represents it and "language" also mediates communication, and brings the understanding of nations closer together and can form a common understanding .

Therefore, in the age of globalization, indigenous and local literature has become very faint and we are talking about "world literature". In the word of national literature, literature has a specific political-geographical, linguistic and cultural territory. While world literature is transnational. It has common global messages, issues and concerns. It does not have a specific political or even cultural realm. Though, Goethe is known as pioneer of world literature who has discovered & elaborated it but in fact it goes back to the great Persian-speaking poets of Iran-India. Poets such as Rumi, Hafez, Bidel  Dehlavi and  Iqbal, whose message were really humanity and love, used their universal poetry as the language of world reconciliation.

Another important issue the utility and importance of comparative literature is to recognize the literature of the "other."  Because basically the literature of any nation is a mixture of cultures and subcultures, some of which are rooted in the cultures of other countries, and this, in itself, is a step towards recognizing common literary symbols to access this universal literature.

Translation has an important role in this regard. The social role of societies has played a key role. Translation is important in the modernization of cultures and it is not an exaggeration to say that the role of translation in the cultural orientation in the new age is far more decisive than other cultural factors. The term translated thinking refers to thinking that is popularized in society through the translation works of knowledge, insight, and character of the "other."

The contribution of books and translations in the relations between Iran and India  has been important for a long time. It has a history of two thousand years. Hindi books has been published in Iran, some of which have been reprinted several times. I mention some of the best sellers because of their fame and importance; The historical and attractive novel "Iran and Babur" written by Arcsin William with the translation of the famous Iranian translator, Zabihullah Mansouri, which tells a story of Babar, the founder of the Mongol dynasty of India and his relationship with Shah Ismail I, the founder of the Safavid dynasty. This book has been published 20 times with sixty thousand copies. Iranian intellectuals and researchers also presented best-selling and prestigious works in introducing Indian culture and civilization to Iranians. Thousands of copies of it have been published. Also, the books on "Religions and Philosophical Schools of India" written by the late Iranian scientist Dariush Shaygan, which has been published 8 times and 32,000 copies in 35 years, which increased the awareness of Iranians about Indian religions and its philosophical ideology. Popular works in Iran are related to Gandhi. It is for your kind information that Mahabharata , Ramayana and Panjtantara has also been  translated in to Persian in Iran.

Iran Culture House New Delhi always encourages the academic and cultural initiatives of scholars and  poets. Keeping this in view we have assisted in  publication of the translated book  kitab-e-Iran by prof. Abhay Singh, Nishabd by Prof. Balram Shukla and many others.

From the volume and level of prominent Iranian personalities who work in the field of cultural and international studies of other countries, India has a high rank both in the past and in the contemporary period. Fathollah Mojtabaei Dr. Haddad Adel and a large number of university professors who presented many works on Indology.

- The importance of literary translation in the cultural relations between Iran and India is more important today than before because the image and view of the people of Iran and India to each other remain mainly historical and retrospective and unaware of each other's contemporary intellectual, cultural and literary developments. Translations have great potentials in developing morals and human values ​​and strengthening the common understanding of the two nations.

Hopefully, we will see the translation and publication of contemporary Indian literary works in Iran as soon as possible, and the path of joint cooperation between Iran culture House and Sahitya Academy in translating and publishing literary works of the two countries will be more smoother in future and will see more cooperation in this field.
