The Cultural Counsellor of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Zimbabwe, Mr Hamid Bakhtiyar, accompanied by at the visiting representative of the International Institute for Islamic Studies from the religious city of Qom, Mr Khodami, this Wednesday, the 2nd August 2023, paid a courtesy call on the secretary general of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), Reverend Wilfred Dimingu, at the ZCC offices in Harare. The meeting which was held in a very cordial and warm environment, saw both parties agreeing to work together in the promotion of interreligious ties, mainly in the holding of joint meetings and intensive courses as well as in the compilation of joint scientific and research works from both parties. Both parties agreed to extensively work together in the promotion of interfaith dialogue processes, through jointly hosting and participating in conferences and seminars where issues to do with peaceful coexistence between Muslim, Christians and the followers of other faiths would be discussed. In pursuance of this noble global idea, Mr Khodami presented a draft Memorandum of Understanding proposal to the Zimbabwe Council of Churches, a document that proposes the establishment of a strong and formal working relationship between the Zimbabwe Council of Churches and the International Institute for Islamic Studies. Reverend Dimungu promised to expedite the signing of the MoU. Also discussed were the aggressive actions of some sections of the European community towards the peaceful religion of Islam, such as the recent insults to the Holy book of Islam, the Qur’an. In light of these transgressions, Mr Bakhtiyar requested the Zimbabwe Council of Churches to issue out a statement condemning such heinous attacks on Islam. The Zimbabwe Council of Churches, ZCC, founded in 1964, is a communion of 31 mainline churches with approximately 3 million members in Zimbabwe. The core business of the organisation is to facilitate the empowerment and renewal of member churches so that they have a sustainable and transforming Christian presence in Zimbabwe.
