Being one of the oldest cities of Iran, Hamadan has, throughout its history, presented many writers and scientists to the world, and perhaps Baba Taher Oryan and Abu Ali Sina (Avicenna) can be considered the most outstanding among them. Bu-Ali Sina University of Hamedan is one of the great scientific centers of Iran, which has been named after Abu Ali Sina in recognition of his services.

Who Was Abu Ali Sina?

Abu Ali Sina was a great Iranian scientist, mathematician, physician, poet, physicist, and philosopher of the 10th and 11th centuries CE who showed his genius in his childhood and became one of the most influential scientists of the world in his era such that his works are still taught in many universities around the world.

During his lifetime, he traveled several times to the big cities of Iran and finally returned to Hamadan. Abu Ali Sina died in his hometown of Hamadan in 1037 CE and was buried there. His tomb is considered one of the tourist attractions of Hamadan.

The History of Bu-Ali Sina University

The initial steps to establish Bu-Ali Sina Hamadan University were taken in 1973 when a treaty was signed between the governments of Iran and France, in which the establishment of this university was also mentioned. This university officially began its activities in 1975 and in 1977 it admitted 200 students in associate and bachelor courses in four departments of “Agriculture”, “Health Sciences”, “Environmental Sciences” and “Educational Sciences”.

This university gradually expanded and today it has 13 faculties 9 of which. i.e. the faculties of “Engineering”, “Agriculture”, “Chemistry”, “Humanities”, “Arts and Architecture”, “Veterinary Science”, “Basic Sciences”, “Economic and Social Sciences”, and “Sports Sciences” are on the main campus of the university. The remaining four faculties of this university are “Faculty of Food Industry” in Bahar, “Faculty of Engineering and Natural Resources” in Tuyserkan, “Faculty of Management and Accounting Faculty” in Razan, and “Faculty of Engineering” in Kabudarahang. The Fatemiyeh Complex of Higher Education of this university in the city of Nahavand is a special center of higher education for girls.

The university has 440 faculty members and 12,000 students who pursue their higher education in 317 fields at the associate, bachelor, master, and doctorate levels. Bu-Ali Sina University of Hamadan has had 47 thousand graduates so far.

Research Activities of the Bu-Ali Sina University

Among the 13 Faculties of Bu-Ali Sina University, the faculties of Chemistry, Engineering, Agriculture, Basic Sciences, and Human Sciences are of the highest ranks in terms of scientific production and the number of students admitted. 9 faculty members of this University and four of its graduates are on the list of most cited scientists in the world.

A center called “Growth and Entrepreneurship” was established at this university in 2003 to provide the necessary support for creative ideas. Bu-Ali Sina University also publishes 13 scientific journals (two in English) in different fields.

Plant Chemistry Research Center, Water Research Institute, Office of Mutual Relationship with Industry, and Center for Growth and Entrepreneurship are other departments that are responsible for supporting the research scholars of the university. International Position of Bu-Ali Sina University

In the ISC Ranking published in 2021, Bu-Ali Sina University was among the top universities in Iran in the field of agricultural sciences with a rank of 601 to 700. This university is also known as one of the top universities in Iran in the field of chemistry.

So far 45 MOUs of scientific cooperation have been signed between Bu-Ali Sina University and foreign universities and every year, professors from different universities come to this university to teach students at the postgraduate level.

Bu-Ali Sina University has, so far, had 200 non-Iranian graduates. Various educational facilities and services have been made available to non-Iranian students by this university. The Center for Teaching Persian Language to Non-Iranian Students is one of the educational centers that is active in providing in-person and online courses to foreign students.
