East Azarbaijan province is one of the important provinces of Iran, which has always played a special and effective role in the historical events and developments of this country. Azarbaijan Shahid Madani University is one of the comprehensive universities of this province, which is located near Azarshahr and 35 km from Tabriz.

Who was Shahid Madani?

Mir Asadullah Madani was a cleric and scholar of Islamic sciences who was born in Azarshahr in 1914. He studied religious sciences in Yazd, Qom, and Najaf and had actively participated in the struggles that led to the victory of the Iranian Islamic Revolution in 1979. He was assassinated and martyred in 1981 while performing Friday prayers.

The History of Azarbaijan Shahid Madani University

The history of Shahid Madani University dates back to 1989 when it was founded as “Teacher’s Training University of Tabriz” and was considered the main center of higher education for teachers in northwest of Iran for 13 years.

Following some structural revisions in Iran’s higher education system, the university was reborn in 2001 as a multi-disciplinary non-profit public institution of higher education and named “Azarbaijan Teacher’s Training University”. In 2011, it was renamed as Azarbaijan Shahid Madani University in honor of Martyr Ayatollah Madani.

Educational and Research Activities

Shahid Madani University has two campuses the main campus of which with an area of 1200 hectares is located near Azarshahr. The Tabriz campus, the activities of which at postgraduate level are research-based provides an environment for cultivating the innovative ideas of students.

Presently, the number of faculty members of this university stands at 280 and some 7500 students pursue their higher education in 120 fields at three undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. levels in the following seven faculties:

1. Basic sciences

2. Engineering

3. Information Technology and Computer Engineering

4. Agriculture

5. Literature and Humanities

6. Educational Sciences and Psychology

7. Theology

According to available statistics, more than 25 thousand people had graduated from this university by 2023.

Two research institutes of “Applied Studies of Power Systems” and “Social Psychosocial Health” and the two laboratories of “Molecular Simulation” and “Resilient Smart Networks” are among the centers available to the researchers of this university for conducting their research activities.

 

International Status and Activities of Shahid Madani University

Based on the Times Higher Education Institute ranking system published in 2023, Shahid Madani University ranks 174th among Asian universities and 23rd among Iranian universities. This university has been quite active in conducting research and more than 10 thousand research papers produced by the researchers of the university have been published in international journals, which has had a positive effect on the international ranking of this university.

This academic center of higher education has had scientific and research collaborations with a number of foreign universities in various fields. Cooperation in the field of the effects of earthquake on historical monuments of the province with Kanazawa University of Japan and a joint research project with Italy’s University of Bari Aldo Moro on investigating the environmental diversity of Arasbaran have been some the international activities of Shahid Madani University.

Every year, this university publishes a call for the admission of non-Iranian students. The office of “Scientific and International Cooperation” has been established in this university in order to carry out the necessary arrangements for concluding memorandums of understanding and holding various international conferences and events as well as handling the matters related to the education of foreign students.
