The Architecture of Tabriz: Iran at the Crossroads of East and West

With its resilient, inward-looking architecture and its outward-looking spirit, Tabriz offers an invitation to discover another layer of Iran’s identity. It reminds us that the character of a nation is not forged in isolation, but strengthened through its encounters with the wider world—and through its ability to endure even the greatest upheavals. To walk through Tabriz is to follow the echoes of the Silk Road. Here, every brick seems to tell the story of a Venetian merchant, a Persian poet, and a world that, centuries ago, found its own path toward exchange, coexistence, and connection. That legacy still endures today, inviting us to reflect on what it truly means to build, to endure, and to remain connected across cultures and civilizations.

Persepolis: The Terrace of Royal Power

The Achaemenid Empire stretched from the Indus to the Nile, encompassing dozens of peoples, languages, and beliefs. Force could conquer such a vast realm, but it could not secure its lasting unity. The empire needed an idea—one powerful enough to bring all its diversity together under a shared vision. Persepolis was the embodiment of that idea. It was not a temple, nor a tomb, nor a royal palace in the conventional sense. Persepolis was a ceremonial capital—a place of royal audience, where, during Nowruz, the King received delegations from across the empire. Its architecture was designed to give lasting form to this ceremony of welcome, order, and imperial unity.
