Mosques of Iran

Persian mosques are among the defining expressions of Iranian architecture, not merely for their domes, minarets, or dazzling tilework, but because they have always been woven into the lives of the people. Markets came and went, bathhouses flourished and faded, caravanserais rose and disappeared. But the mosque was always something more. It was a place where people came to find silence, to pray, to weep, or sometimes to raise their voices. Its stone floors have borne the footsteps of every walk of life, from kings to beggars. Perhaps that is the simplest way to describe it: The mosque is Iran in miniature.

Borujerdi House Symmetry, Light, and Love

Its romantic origin story reminds us that some of the greatest architectural masterpieces are born not merely from power and wealth, but from love, healthy rivalry, and deeply human motivations. With all its grandeur, symmetry, and refinement, Borujerdi House stands as a symbol of how architecture can become a physical embodiment of love: love for the beloved, love for art, and love for creation.

pic

Iranian architect

You will not easily find the Iranian architect in the history books. Not because such architects did not exist or lacked importance, but because they did not seek recognition for their names. Their anonymity was not imposed upon them, it was a choice. Their professional training and ethos taught them that their work was for God and for the people, not for fame or fortune. But let me make one thing clear, the Iranian architect was a genius. Not merely a skilled craftsman or an accomplished builder, but a creative mind capable of solving complex problems. The work may have been collective, but without those exceptional minds, that collective effort would never have achieved what it did.

In such a city, water was not merely a commodity for everyday use it was the very source of life and one of the most valuable assets. Water reservoirs were the beating heart of Yazd s water supply system, and the Six Windcatcher Water Reservoir was its shining jewel.

Deyr e Gachin Caravanserai, The Mother of Iran’s Caravanserais, Ancient Guardian of the Silk Road

In the heart of the Dasht-e Kavir, along the ancient route connecting Qom, Varamin, and Rey, stands a remarkable structure that many architectural historians have called the “mother of Iran’s caravanserais.” The Deyr-e Gachin Caravanserai dates back to the Sasanian era and was rebuilt and restored during the Seljuk, Safavid, and Qajar periods, making it one of the oldest and most significant surviving caravanserais in Iran. Inscribed as part of the “Persian Caravanserai” serial property on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it was far more than a roadside inn. It was a true fortified caravanserai, whose stone and brick walls bear witness to centuries of trade, travel, pilgrimage, and cultural exchange.
